Upset, scared, and mad - Had a big fall, concussion, numbness...

Posted by Barb @amberpep, May 20, 2018

Hi all .... I have not been here for awhile but I really need some input. . I won't go into the details or it would take forever, but I live in an apartment – 1st floor. Our sidewalks are poorly maintained …. between the concrete and grass is a gap, that you can easily see through, about 6". Alongside is a metal plate that I assume is part of the way they set the concrete is set – it protrudes 2". I was walking my new puppy (8 lbs.) and got the heel of my sneaker caught in the metal and flew, landed on the concrete pad holding the elec. unit, landing on my left side, head hit and bounced up and hit on other side where there was a vertical metal flange of some sort. Went to doctor …. had concussion, and lots of hurting and bruising ….. all within soft tissue – nothing on surface to show. Next day from scapula to shoulder to elbow to first two digits on that hand were painful and very numb and tingling and burning. Saw 2 doctors ….. didn't seem to think a thing about the numbness in my fingers ……. I read on Mayo last night that it's probably a pinched nerve from the fall. It hurts like crazy from scapula on down to hand. Been told by others nothing could be done that it just had to heal itself. I think I need a neurologist, but don't know. My daughter has my puppy because I can't pick her up without major pain – 8 pounder. I just moved down to this area from MD
about 2 years ago and don't know where else to go besides the Internist, and they have the system of you get whoever is available …. you have no doctor of your own. I'm so upset I don't know what to do. I'm 73, live alone, and I just could cry. I'm scared, want a doctor who can give me definite info. I'm inclined to go back to MD to see the doctor I had up there. j The two doctors I saw did not pick up on the numbness in my fingers .... to me that says "nerve problem" …… advice?abby.

Thanks so much Colleen ....I will read about gailfaith's experience. I wrote one last time to the management here, and gave them 1 more week to have that sidewalk and metal protrusion repaired. I worded it so that they would understand that if I didn't hear back about any changes, I would contact a lawyer. Well, got an e-mail today from Mgt. and they said that the "landscapers were coming out this week to see what needed to be done." If they don't, I'll probably give them a few extra days and then go to the lawyer. It's been almost 3 weeks, and I still have a lot of bruising, get tired very easily, feel dizziness, and have a headache .... mostly from the concussion I would imagine. I got the OK to start to drive .... well, that's crazy. I'd have to drive with 1 arm, dizzy, headache, and tired. I did find a Geriatric Physician, for which I'm thankful.

@amberpep Hi Abby:

While I know that the above message was directed to Colleen, I just had to chime-in here and let you know that I am so pleased to hear of the proactive steps that you are taking as a result of your fall. You persistence with the management of the complex is to be commended. You are making this situation safer not only for yourself but also for others who live there - good for you! You are making a positive impact in your community and that is just great.

I am also glad that you found a Geriatric doc. Do you have an appointment scheduled yet?

I appreciate your keeping us all informed, I look forward to hearing from you again.

By the way, has the numbness improved any?

Blessings and best wishes,

Teresa

PS Isn't it nice to no longer be trying to please others? You've come a long way and you deserve congratulations.

Hi Abby @amberpep
I am so sorry to read of what you are going through since you fell. Oh my goodness, I can only imagine the pain you are in. Your puppy Ginger sounds delightful! Although you cannot pick her up right now, her puppy kisses must be good medicine for you.
Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Jen .... things are improving, slowly, but at least going in the right direction. My left side is still tender and I'm wearing a tennis elbow brace for the muscles and ligaments in that area ; still tired, headache from the concussion, but the doc. said both could take quite awhile. I'm getting my Ginger back tomorrow. She a good little girl, but I won't be able to pick her up. My daughter has taught her to hop on a box and then onto her lap, so that should work here too.
Teresa ..... yes, I do have an appt. with the Geriatric doctor for mid-June .... I'm delighted to have found one only about 3 miles from my place. Interesting about the Mgt. Once I started eluding to the fact of a possible lawsuit, bingo! The landscapers come tomorrow to see how to fix that whole area! I guess "good Suzy" has a voice now and uses it! They know my son is a lawyer in D.C., but a Patent Lawyer not a personal injury lawyer, but he's given me good sound advice.
Time for a nap ..... this old flower is wilting ....

I am very sorry your fall has you so hurt. It does tAke a long time to heal and thank goodness you haven't more damage.l took a fall a few years back when my landlord repaired bathroom and left a ball of carpet in the doorway, I didn't see and tumbled. I should have gone to ER right away, but my thinking was it would just take time. I slowly lost use of my left arm, couldn't turn neck to left very far and then my legs went weak. Six months later they figured out I had four cervical disc herniations. I've had surgery and healed but not taking pictures or getting help right away made for a lengthy bAttle with x land Lord and such a lowball offer my attorney is appalled. Please get pictures before they do the work and they should offer you something with that.

Hi Jewel ..... you sure had a time of it. As far as broken bones, the x-rays did not show anything, but my doctor is suspicious of that very end of my elbow .... thus the tennis elbow brace. It was very strange, when I took this "flying fall" (as I call it) and slammed onto the concrete, that was one of he few times I did not have on my Great Call necklace .... had I been wearing it, they would have detected a fall, come on and asked me, the ambulance would have come to take me to the hospital. Now I wish I'd had it on, and am wearing it 99% of the time now. Probably if I'd have done that, I'd have saved myself a whole lot of grief and pain by getting it all tended to at once, and an MRI would have seen any hairline fractures.
But ..... an "old lady" can still learn, and that was a lesson for sure! Also, my doctor told me that it takes longer for deeply bruised internal tissue to heal than it does bone. That was a surprise to me.

Hi again Jewel ..... yes, ever since this happened, every day one of my kids takes pictures of that area, and they date them.

@amberpep good to hear you have the necklace and your doing all the right things to get better. I sure hope you can find away to maintain relationship with mgmt. My fall made it really hard on living at mobile home park and I hadn't asked mgmt for anything until I had to have MRI... medicare copay was too high. I did not receive their help and one of their houses suddenly catching fire in middle of night scared me to vacate. If I had money i could afford to win my case but only a small town lawyer will not front cost of letter from surgeon. Oh well, learned myself many things from it. goodnight, julie

Hi Jewel .... I've had a good relationship since I've been here, and in going through this, I've been very careful in filtering my wording of things. My last e-mail to them I mentioned that it had been 2-1/2 weeks since my fall and had so far heard nothing from them. I explained the danger, not just to me, but to the other older folks in this building, and that I felt one more week was adequate to fix it, or at least start the process. I told her about my 3 trips to the doctor, the x-rays, all the exams, and the horrible pain and not being able to do much of anything because of the concussion. I was trying to get them to "feel" like I did and do if this had happened to them. I thanked them for helping with this.
Well .... they started this week ... HOORAY! But, if it isn't done right, and that metal plate not cut off, I'll be back to them. But I figure I'd get more cooperation with honey than vinegar. I always try to be very nice, even when coating something unpleasant with chocolate!
I really don't expect any problems .... I never said the word "sue" but they got my drift.
