Upset, scared, and mad - Had a big fall, concussion, numbness...

Posted by Barb @amberpep, May 20, 2018

Hi all .... I have not been here for awhile but I really need some input. . I won't go into the details or it would take forever, but I live in an apartment – 1st floor. Our sidewalks are poorly maintained …. between the concrete and grass is a gap, that you can easily see through, about 6". Alongside is a metal plate that I assume is part of the way they set the concrete is set – it protrudes 2". I was walking my new puppy (8 lbs.) and got the heel of my sneaker caught in the metal and flew, landed on the concrete pad holding the elec. unit, landing on my left side, head hit and bounced up and hit on other side where there was a vertical metal flange of some sort. Went to doctor …. had concussion, and lots of hurting and bruising ….. all within soft tissue – nothing on surface to show. Next day from scapula to shoulder to elbow to first two digits on that hand were painful and very numb and tingling and burning. Saw 2 doctors ….. didn't seem to think a thing about the numbness in my fingers ……. I read on Mayo last night that it's probably a pinched nerve from the fall. It hurts like crazy from scapula on down to hand. Been told by others nothing could be done that it just had to heal itself. I think I need a neurologist, but don't know. My daughter has my puppy because I can't pick her up without major pain – 8 pounder. I just moved down to this area from MD
about 2 years ago and don't know where else to go besides the Internist, and they have the system of you get whoever is available …. you have no doctor of your own. I'm so upset I don't know what to do. I'm 73, live alone, and I just could cry. I'm scared, want a doctor who can give me definite info. I'm inclined to go back to MD to see the doctor I had up there. j The two doctors I saw did not pick up on the numbness in my fingers .... to me that says "nerve problem" …… advice?abby.

hi Abby @amberpep
I moved your 2 most recent posts to the discussion "Upset, scared, and mad - Had a big fall, concussion, numbness..." so that you can stay connected to the people who know your story and want to hear your updates: good and bad.

The acronym CRNP-PMH means Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner-Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. So as far as credentials are concerned, your interim care is in good hands. I hope that the replacement hire also has a personality that you connect well with. That is so important and I think you could use an empathetic, caring person in your court right now. Best of luck getting your overpayment back from the dentist.

Thank you so much Colleen .... yes, it seems that ever since I moved from MD to VA everything that could go wrong has. I now live in a low income apt., and just barely get by financially. In Frederick I had my own condo, dear friends, a wonderful church ..... it was "home" and my condo was my "nest." And, once again, I seem to have a sign on my back that says "sucker." In MD I had a neighbor who constantly wanted my time, always coming over, or calling, and on and on and on. I finally had to say something to her. Now it seems it's happened again. A neighbor lady across the hall is constantly calling, knocking on my door, wanting me to come over, and visa versa. She's a nice person but she is hovering and I seem to have gotten myself into that same situation. She goes away every month for 4 days and asks me to take care of her cats, which I don't mind, but sometimes, it's just completely inconvenient. It ties me down twice a day to have to be here. Guess I better read one of my Boundaries books again, but I hate to hurt anyone's feelings, and it inevitably happens.

Well, I did it! I wrote her a letter this morning, put it inside her mailbox and told her that I did not appreciate her saying to me, "you really aggravate me when you don't answer your phone." To which I told her I was reverting to my healthy lifestyle (e Bipolar 2) and that is, I eat dinner, clean up, shower, put on my nightclothes, and sit in my bed at the far end of my apartment either reading, on the compputer, or wcatsI havatching TV. I am not a slave to my telephone." Now we'll see how that flies - it won't I'm sure. It's very assuming to just "assume" someone will watch your , and take care of your plants, 2x a day .... it keeps me restricted here. And I believe the folks that watch her little dog feel the same way. So, now we'll see what happens, or not.

@amberpep Sorry to hear that you fell but l suggest you go to a neurologist since you had a concussion. There is a reason you should be concerned about when you fall. And l am finding out if a doctor doesn't specialize in something they just don't know and as Los how to treat the problem. I had to travel all the way from Oklahoma to go to the mayo clinic in Minnesota because the doctors have no clue of encephalitis. And when l got there able all the test they said you were misdiagnosed. And l had to fire 4 neurologist. So do your research and check out the doctors carefully. God luck!!!

Hi Lisa ..... seems all is well now .... I had a lot of sleepiness for a few weeks but the worst part was the internal bruising. Wow. That's pretty well gone now too. Thanks so much for writing.

So who did you see at Mayo in Minnesota? I have been researching what had been called a brain tumor and it suggests multi healthcare to see. Especially because I am now having problems talking, conversations, etc. I have other health challenges and would like to get the right diagnosis.

@tina5 I saw so many doctors but the neurologist that l saw was Dr.McEvoy. At first we didn't agree because right away she thought what my previous doctors were telling me was correct. She had it made in her mind that l was going to end up going to behavioral therapy but after all the other doctors and their diagnoses she finally had to say l was misdiagnosed but l would say Dr. Britton is suppose to be very good. I have done my research and he is one of the 2 doctors at the mayo clinic in Minnesota that deals with encephalitis. I wanted to go to him but l had already had an appointment with her. But her specialty was not in encephalitis oe encephalopathy l had to see a hepatkgist for that because it a disease with your liver. But there are so many neurologist at the mayo clinic but read their background because just because you are a neurologist doesn't mean you specialize in everything with the brain.
