I am actively and urgently in the process of deciding which osteoporosis treatment I want to "pitch" to my doctors. Fosomax is the formulary for my HMO, but that does not appeal to me at all. I feel that I need something that is shown to rebuild bone (15 lumbar and thoracic vertebral compression fractures). Initially Forteo was top contender (refrigeration requirement is an issue) until I came across Tymlos (refrigeration being easier to manage is one of several benefits over Forteo). Can and should treatments such as these be used in conjunction with strontium citrate, about which I know nothing by the way? Any feedback to help me through this maze will be highly appreciated

@clarkedu I dont know the extent of your bone loss but there are things you can do without drugs.

Welcome to Connect, @clarkedu. It looks like you've done your research. I applaud you for seeking out experiences of others add to your evaluation of which drug might work for you. @lioness is right that much can be done without drugs, but sometimes progression is such that drugs are required in conjunction with lifestyle changes.

I am in the same situation ... researching and studying my options for treatment of my osteopenia. I was on Fosamax long-term. Throughout the past 15 years I have had four doctors retire. I believe I may have been on Fosamax too long. I was not aware of the need to take a vacation from the use or being taken off of the drugs after X number of years. Research indicates that rare but serious Fosamax femur fractures are associated with long-term use. ... Furthermore, the Fosamax femur fractures occurred in patients who had been taking Fosamax for an average of five or more years. Well, I was one of those who had the femur fractures. One of the fractures occurred last year because I fell on a broken sidewalk in September, 2018. I fractured my right leg, pelvis and hip... I had an IM Nailing. On August 28th,2019, After 51 weeks...I had to have that IM Nailing surgery redone because the wrong size rod was used. When I was nearly finished with my physical therapy for the re-nailing it was discovered that I had a stress fracture in my left femur. On November 13, I had surgery on the left leg. After the re-mailing in August my orthopedic doctor took me off of the Fosamax. I understand that it’s a difficult to find the best treatment.... I know there are three major treatments.... Of course all of which have side effects, not to mention the cost. I am still researching and will be meeting with an endocrinologist in the first quarter of 2020. This is just my story ...I’m not saying that everyone who takes Fosamax ,or other drugs in that same class of drugs, will have femur fractures... I’m just one that did.

I have the same question “ can strontium be used in conjunction with forte I or Prolia”.
I have searched but cannot find an answer.

Strontium citrate is an earth mineral similar to calcium. The body seems to use it in bone similar to the way it uses calcium. Research has shown that strontium seems to turn on calcium receptors in the body.
Some on this site have said that strontium produces false readings and that bone is not healthier as you use strontium. Research has not shown that to be the case. Instead research shows that strontium produces bone that is less likely to fracture and bone mineralization is kept. Research also shows that the dxa read may be as high as 10% too high because strontium is a heavier mineral. This is called the dxa skew, but as long as the dxa skews upward the actual number is not as important since many things may skew a dxa number including different dxa machines.

BoneLady has a good blog that shows current research and comparisons.

I hope that this may be helpful as you research your options.

Some of these postings are several years old. Osteoporosis treatments have come a long way since 2018. My rheumatologist and endocrinologist both recommended Evenity. In 12 months I saw significant improvement in my spine but not in my femur. My belief is that my lack of exercise caused the decrease in bone density in my femur so now I am serious about exercise. I've transitioned to Prolia after 12 months of Evenity. Still no side effects as far as I can tell. The monthly injections of Evenity were in the doctor's office and were not bad at all. With Prolia I will have a shot twice a year and I've had the first one and it was not bad either. Personally, I prefer taking a drug that has been vetted instead of cobbling together several chemicals that are not proven scientifically to work and be safe for the majority of people who may be taking several drugs that might interact with them. Whatever you decide to take please do it with the guidance and supervision of a qualified medical doctor.

I know its been 7 years, so I'm not sure if you are still on this site, but what did you decide? I was on Tymlos for 3 months and now on Forteo for the past 5 months and cannot wait to get off it. I feel like its loosening my teeth and I am pushing through the fatigue, even after a good night's sleep. While I do feel like my bones are stronger, I'm thinking I will let the prescription run out and be done with it. My plan is to try strontium citrate, more D3, k7 and continue with my exercise.
Would be interested in hearing how you made out. Thanks!
