High Levels of Vitamin B12 and Ferritin: Any pointers?

Posted by cocoa @annieecruz, Apr 29, 2018

What type of doctor handles test like the MMA Urine test and the HoloTC? Test related to how your body breaks down/absorbs and transport/bonds B12? My B12 test came back extremely abnormal.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Blood Cancers & Disorders Support Group.

I have recently had two B12 labs, both in 2000+. It was part of a series of tests ordered because I had just been diagnosed{Dec.19th ] with Small Fiber/autonomic peripheral neuropathy in a non-length dependent pattern. My neurologist had anticipated I would have a B12 deficiency???...All of my extensive testing looking for the cause of the neuropathy were negative except for the B12.... I am being referred to an oncologist and we are NOW looking for a cause of the high B12 as well as the cause of neuropathy? I am very interested in reading your comments because there is very little info available, also I am so happy to have found this group.

@12061948

I’m trying to figure out why my B12 is always 2000 in blood work. Drs say I don’t need Supplements I have it stored. ??
But I have high SIBO LEVELS. 81. ?? GI. Issues. Degenerating disc. Periphial Neurapathy whole body nerve pain. I understand that B12 not being used properly in the body can cause these symptoms. Chronic fatigue
Does anyone have the same experience???

hello 12061948, All my cancer markers came back negative, I had my colonoscopy, had a few small polyps removed, and was told I had an area of redness in my colon which the doc biopsied. I have an appointment to go back for the results the end of January, but may go to the hospital and get my results before then. My PAP came back normal also, so there is not anything else I can think of to explain the high B12s, so at this point I’ll just wait and see what happens.
I’d still be interested to know if any one else finds a reason for their high B12’s. I wish you all well. Emy

Along with some more information on the significance of b12 levels, https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/003705.htm I found this recent study that I thought might interest you:

With regard to neuropathy, very often there is no identifiable cause – there are a number of conditions that can trigger it. May I ask if you noticed anything that might have triggered the neuropathy?

@Kanaaz Pereira. After extensive blood testing my neurologist has not found a cause for my neuropathy. All of my tests were negative except for the B12>2000. I am not diabetic, my MS was eliminated as a cause, my blood tests sent to Mayo Clinic eliminated any autoimmunity as a cause, I am up to date on mammograms and colonoscopies. At this time I am being referred to a neurologist who specializes in Autonomic Peripheral Neuropathy and to an oncologist. My neuropathy has been ongoing for at least 7 yrs.

Are you talking about vitamin b12?

REPLY

@sakota ..Yes, tested twice ..both results were >2000..all of the other blood testing results have been within the normal range, except for my B12. The testing started because my neurologists was looking for a possible underlying cause for my autonomic peripheral neuropathy diagnosis, and a low B12 could be a cause...however with the high test result, I am now being referred to an oncologist....I think and hope its just an anomaly

Are you taking a multivitamin? I too have had high vitamin B on my labs for the last 2 years during periods of time where I stopped my multi vitamin. I have found the most vitamins have well over the recommended daily allowance of B vitamins. I have had two instances a couple of years appart where I was taking a multivitamin (one had 400% and the other 800% of the daily allowance) and I had to stop taking them because my blood pressure was high, ringing in my ears, I was having trouble sleeping, and I was anxious. I have just asked my Dr. to repeat the test again. I think if it is high again, I will need to find answers if B can store in your body for long periods of time.

Hi, my dad’s B12 test results came very high.

Basically his B12 level is >2000 when the normal range is 200-900.

Is it normal? Should we worry about it? Any other tests that we need to check.

With his current chemo Pemetrexed , the doctor told to take B12 shots 7 days before the chemo with folic acid and he did it during last chemo. His another cycle is coming in one week and I guess we should stop B12 but very confused now since there are many discussion on that. Thanks
