Adults On The Autism Spectrum

Posted by Mamacita, Alumna Mentor @mamacita, Apr 29, 2018

Maybe you were really shy as a child. Perhaps you took home a huge stack of books from the school library, read them, and returned them the next day. Or did your best friend find you crying in your closet, unable to answer the question "Why?" At any rate, your life could be traced to the Self-Help section of the local bookstore. Unfortunately, most of the books were not much help. ADHD seemed to fit, at times. Your shrink said you might be Bi-Polar, although she wasn't really certain. All you knew was that you rarely fit in, anywhere. One day at work, it hit you square in the face: I don't speak these people's language! Really, it was like you were all playing this game, and everyone knew the rules but you. You couldn't tell a joke, and you never "got" any joke your co-worker tried to tell you. People started getting annoyed with you, because you had a memory like a steel trap. They didn't appreciate it when you called them on the carpet. Who knew? This was my life, and worse. I finally aced several tests that pointed me to the answer to my questions. The Autism Spectrum. Guess what? Little kids with Autism grow up to be Adults with Autism. Diagnosed late in life? This is the place for you!

Haaaaapy Weekend, you guys!!!!! Here where I live, we have an entire weekend of festivities to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend.
I can probably count on the fingers of one hand how many times I have attended these festivities.
I WANT to attend all the events.
I would be content if I could attend only two or three of the events.
I will most likely only attend maybe one event.
And that's a big "maybe."

As most of you know, I did not know that I was Autistic, until my senior years. I knew I was a bit of an extroverted introvert. I learned in my fifties that I was most indeed ADHD. So I lived most of my life believing that there was something "wrong" with me. Always on the outside looking in. Depressed, sad, anxious, while trying to raise beautiful children who were simply perfect.

Somehow I knew that I had to mimic the "normal" people around me, in order to get along and have friends. To be able to work with co-workers. I was actually really good at that. But now I understand that is referred to as "masking." Pretending to be someone you are not in order to get along.

My life is so different today. To quote a phrase, it is the best of times, and it is the worst of times. Best: Because I am free to remove the masks and simply be myself. Worst: Because sometimes it is painful to let go of who you have always been, to walk into who you really are.

I like the real me.
I like the real you.
No masks needed here at the Spectrum Cafe.
Be who you are. Pull up a chair. There is a place already set at the table for you.

Life is not always easy. We know that. But it really can be better when we are together! So, here's some homework for you.

Look up "masking" and see if you can identify with any of it. It will benefit you, I can sure tell you that much.

Adios, amigos. Talk to you again soon!

@sirgalahad, a clean gut is important for everyone. My family takes probiotics, eats yogurt, and we love it.

But it seems to me that common sense would tell folks that bleach and little children just don't go together.

Desperate people do desperate things. This is why we are all trying to get the word out that Autism is just a Neurodiverse brain. Sure, there are sometimes conditions that accompany Autism. Those are the issues that need to be worked on. Not medieval torture methods designed to remove those issues..

This is why you and I and so many others share at every venue we can. To help as many as we can. When we say "love and light" we really mean it.

Love and light to you and all our Neurodivergent Tribe!

Yes, I agree with you, @mamacita. It's so good to have the mask off - it's easier to breathe and to also see where you are going. Masks block the sunlight and fresh air. I'm also glad that we are all together. We are better together. 😊👍

Teresa, Volunteer Mentor, you always have just the right words to say. Not that others don't...they do!

You just have a way of lighting up the room here at the Spectrum Cafe. Others do their part, as well, and I will brag on them too.

You have helped make this a calm, comforting place to be. You are open minded and caring. You transcend the barriers between Typical and Neurodiverse.

That is a big deal.
Enough said.
Naptime.

Love and hugs,

Mamacita

Happy Memorial Day. Going back to the doc in the box. Shingles and Cellulitis. Oy
vey.

I am a terrible patient. Meltdown. Trigger warning: When you are Autistic and you are totally overstressed and your persons do not understand the words that are coming out of your mouth....you have a meltdown. You can't scream sometimes. You certainly can't talk. You love your person or persons but why can't they see what a fix you are in. Why?

Love and light to you all. This day will get better.
