Spasticity?

Posted by aarniek @aarniek, Apr 7, 2018

I have been living in my recliner for over 5 years as this muscle spasticity keeps me from walking more than a few feet! It's due to stopping a Benzo with a 5 week taper and 3 neurologists have done nothing for me! Anyone find something to help?( I even had Botox and it did nothing)

@aarniek thanks for starting this discussion specifically about spasticity. I'd like to invite @hopeful33250 @hump1278 @maryar and @magg to also join the discussion.
Have you tried physio? Is splinting, bracing or casting an option for you?

@12271997 I had the same problem. I never was able to connect to it. I am not sure about the problem. If I come up with any answers, I'll let you know. Teresa

I am a 76 yr. old woman and a stroke survivor of 8 years and 1 month. I began to have really bad spasms in about 2016 and have had 2 severe incidences of drug over doses resulting in medication changes and resulting in my current condition called SPASTICITY, now I am unable to walk at all and I am loosing more mobility every days! IDEAS WELCOME, currently waiting to have a Baclophen pump put in.

Hi, @sharonalllen - You'll note I moved your post to this current discussion, "Spasticity," so that you can meet other members talking about this similar situations. Click VIEW & REPLY in the email notification, and you will be able to read through the past messages on this topic.

I'd also like to introduce you to @12271997 @hopeful33250 @oakbourne @aarniek @magg @maryar and others. I trust they will have some insights for you on losing more mobility every day as well as the intrathecal baclofen pump you are waiting to have put in.

Here is some Mayo Clinic information on on baclofen https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/baclofen-intrathecal-route/description/drg-20062155.

How are you feeling about this pump you will be having put in, @sharonalllen? Do you have a date for the surgical procedure for the placement?

Hello @sharonalllen
I'm sorry to hear of your spasticity. What part of your body is the spasticity centered? I have a Parkinson's disorder and I experience intermittent spasticity in my thighs. I have found that physical therapy (PT) and regular exercise (especially range of motion/stretching exercises) have helped a great deal.

What type of PT and exercises have you tried since your stroke?

@hopeful33250,
I am an avid exerciser and I had to stop because it caused me to have severe pain for several hours after, because I have stopped moving, my condition has become more severe than ever, thus my research into a Baclophen pump.

Hmmm, I'm sorry to hear that, @sharonalllen.

Do even gentle stretches cause you pain? You might check out YouTube videos with the search set for "seated exercises for seniors." Also, Parkinson's patients have the same type of spasticity so you might find "exercises for Parkinson's" to be helpful. I've also used YouTube Tai-Chi for beginners (there are some 9 minute Tai-Chi for beginners YouTube videos).

Ever tried any of these?

Thanks so much for moving me to this discussion. As to how I feel! I have been researching this subject for a while at the insistence of my Dr., quite frankly I am concerned about the side effects listed, these are the same side effects I am experiencing now with the oral. I go for my pre-test January 10, getting nervous! Am waiting to receive the CDB to try, should arrive today. Keeping my mind open!
