Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time

Posted by cindydee @cindydee, Mar 20, 2018

I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

I had horrible side effects that lasted over a week. The first day after the Reclast I got the flu symptoms, but it didn't last long at all. Only a couple of hours. Which was a good thing because I had an hour's drive through the mountains to get back home. Then the following day my right ankle swelled up and I could barely put any weight on it. The day after that the left ankle swelled. Then my right shoulder tensed up and the pain followed. My right arm and hand became so weak the I couldn't lift anything up or even open a bottle of water. Then the next day the same thing happened to my left side. It took me an hour to get myself off the bed. I had no strength left. I could barely walk much less lower myself unto the toilet. It was horrible. Finally the effects wore off and I was so grateful for that. No one told me not to drink caffeine or to hydrate before I go in to get the Reclast. I was told that the day of. I've had a few of the symptoms come back, but not for a few months now. Sorry you went through this. I feel your pain.

Hello @cindydee, welcome to Connect. I am sorry you are having the side-effects that you explain, they sound painful and concerning. I would like to invite @AgentDarien, @arthritichands, @arthritichands, @texasmimi, @faith123, @ritafarmer, and @edieguinn to this conversation to share their experiences with reclast infusions.

@cindydee, you mentioned that you went to the ER for this issue but did not get any new information. If you don't mind sharing, did they explain that this was even a possible side-effect? Are you to return for monitoring or just wait it out?

ReClast. Four weeks ago I had my first ReClast infusion. Two days ago I woke up at night with severe pain in my right leg diagnosed as a torn Achilles’ tendon and tendinitis. I am a healthy , active , exercising 67 female with no other trama. These symptoms can be side affects if ReClast. Never again even tho docs cannot absolutely connect the events. The coincidence is telling to me

@gmbritko @cindydee Having recently discovered that I have osteoporosis these discussions are very pertinent to me. I don't have an appointment with a doctor for this until January, that was the earliest I could get with the doctor I want to go to, so I don't know which medication will be suggested.
Does reclast maintain or build bone? I am hoping to use one of the ones that can build bone. I believe that Forteo and Tymlos are the only two that can.
Your symptoms sound pretty bad. It seems as if none of these medications are without some problems so of course I am worried about that.

I was on reclast for 6 years, I lost bone. Been off all op meds for 3 years. In those 3 years I went from -2.5 to -2.6.

Have you read the Osteoclast medical reports that have been conducted in Europe? Canada? Did you see that both countries have black warning labels on some Osteoclast?
Do you ask your docs lots of questions about how bones build up? Why do these medications cause more fractures? Why do bones naturally build up AND tear down daily? What is the antidote if your bones react negatively with impact fractures while on or recently taken off the Osteoclast? What jaw and dental problems may happen?
Best,

Thank you, @llwortman. I have not checked all of that out but I will now. As I said, my appointment is not until January unless I get called from being on the waitlist. I think it’s an obligation of the patient to be informed before an appointment like this but there are some doctors who do not like that, assumably because they are arrogant and prefer to be treated like a demigod. I hope this doctor is not one of them.
