Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI)

Yes see a nephrologist doc- or maybe urologist! It may be a simple fix of something you're doing or it could be a warning sign. I ignored recurrent uti's for years and wish I could turn back time. Good Luck, Kathy Post-Kidney Transplant 2013

Thank you for the information. I am sorry you had to go through a kidney transplant. It must have been very hard. A friend of mine donated a kidney and I watched what she went through. Thank goodness you had a donor. Thanks again for your response. I will get an appointment with a urologist.

Dear MPeters, I wish you the best as you work with your doctors. I hope to use the Mayo Help group to answer a question. I am CKD Stage 4. Is there an Actuarial Table that will tell me how long I can expect to live after I go on dialysis or am fortunate enough to receive a kidney donation. I am now 65 years old and have GFR level of 25.7. Thanks, RGC

I'd also like to invite @pizon @victoryohvictory @smartchick43 to share their insights, as they've all posted about recurrent UTIs on Connect. @mpeters, how are you managing your symptoms at present?

@mpeters, I also, am sorry to hear that you are experiencing reoccurring uti's. In my opinion, one is enough! I never had a uti until after my transplant. I think that puts me in a more cautious frame of mind, and my local PCP is especially vigilant when I do exhibit symptoms.

I am happy that you will get an appointment with a specialist. You are doing the right thing to seek out a possible cause.

Have you had urinalysis and/or urine cultures done when you have uti symptoms? Be sure to take those records with you.

I am drinking cranberry juice and fluids. Enough to have the right color urine and no more. I am mostly at home so I go to the bathroom frequently. I have switched from taking a bath to taking showers. My last gfr was a little low for my age but it didn’t raise any red flags with my MayonClinic doctor. Any additional ideas will be gratefully received.

I appreciate your kind response. I’m sorry to hear that you are waiting for a kidney and that your GFR is low. I watched a friend go through this and it was hard on him. He did eventually get a kidney transplant at Mayo so I am glad you are linked up with Mayo too. I wish I had the expertise to answer your question about life expectancy but I don’t. Hopefully you will get an answer here soon. Please let us know how you are doing.

@mpeters, How long has it been since you were at your doctor? I do not have a Mayo PCP, although I did get my transplant there. I live too far away, but my local PCP always tells me to call his office when I have a concern. He knows that I do not take overuse that option, or call him about trivial or unnecessary things. He always has provided a response or told me to come in to see him.

I saw my pcp fairly regularly and my next appointment is in April. I saw his nurse practitioner for the uti I have right now.
