Aortic Aneurysms – Introduce yourself & meet others

Welcome to the Aortic Aneurysms group on Mayo Clinic Connect.

An aortic aneurysm is a bulge in the wall of the aorta. The aorta begins deep in the heart as it emerges from the powerful left ventricle, gently arching over the heart, descending into the chest, and finally into the abdomen. Some aortic aneurysms can be harmless; others can lead to catastrophic problems. I invite you to follow this group and connect with others, share experiences, exchange useful information, and learn about aortic aneurysms.

@ginko

Thank you so very much for your kind and encouraging words. I too have a 70th birthday next month. I am waiting for my number to reach the surgery point. Since I am a small person, that may be just before it reaches 5 cm. It helps me to know that you are doing well and I am so happy for you.

Wishing you the best. I’m 74 with a 4.4 abdominal aortic aneurysm. A waiting game.

Yes, waiting is difficult some days. Wish I lived closer to my chosen doc. I would feel better.

I have been diagnosed with Giant Cell Arteritis. Is there a relationship to Aortic Aneurysms?

Hi everyone. I’m so happy to have found this place to share my concerns and victories. I was just diagnosed with a 95% right arteries blockage and was sent to a cardiac ct to confirm whether my enlarged aorta required open heart surgery to correct an aneurysm. As it turned out It was .5 cm shy of the necessity for surgery. Instead they are planning to do a stent tomorrow and then monitor me every 6 months. I am grateful that I didn’t need open heart surgery but I must say that I feel like a walking time bomb because of this aneurysm. I’m sure I’m not the only who feels like this. Thank you for listening.

Welcome to Connect, @grandchild. I'm glad you found us. I wish you the best of luck tomorrow getting the stent. I understand your contradictory feelings of relieved to not need surgery, but at the same time feeling like a ticking time bomb with the aneurysm. You're certainly not alone. Do you have any questions about the procedure tomorrow?

Sonya I was diagnosed with 4.2 thoratic ascending anuerysm. I was inquiring if any one else has. had any symptoms. This is how they discovered it. I have chest pain, between the shoulder blades, dizziness and left arm pain. I realize this is a small anuerysm.

Hi Sonyaparish69, I think you might ask your cardio MD if this was an accidental discovery as I have an ascending aortic aneurysm and I do not have any pain and mine is about the same size of yours. My concern is that the source of your pain is still undiagnosed. Just a good topic for discussion with your MD. I am not a medical professional so can't really say much other than to suggest you check it out with your cardio to assure your symptoms are not from another issue.

I also thought the same thing. I will be seeing a cardiologist.

Your symptoms are those often associated with cardiovascular disease. Don't delay making your appointment and when you call, detail your symptoms so the office will try to get you in ASAP. If you experience chest pain, I suggest calling 911. Better to be safe than sorry.
