Eczema and skin rash

Posted by nanceedee @nanceedeefeperi, Jan 26, 2018

Hello, I’m looking for some feed back on diet as well as advice. I developed a severe eczema flare up this year, and currently have been prescribed an oral steroid. I am gluten intolerant and suffer from fatigue and insomnia. I also have constipation/diarrhea gas and bloating. Been reading about leaky gut and have most the symptoms. I started a probiotic recently as well.
I was wondering if leaky gut can cause the rash over my body that seems seprerate from the eczema? If anyone has any suggestions It would be appreciated.

Hi, have you ever had an IgG ELISA 184 Panel Food Intolerance test done? I ask since you are Gluten intolerant you may have additional food sensitivities and/or intolerances. I had A severe case of Salmonella poisoning which completely wiped out my gut flora and other back to back medical events which caused me to take numerous rounds of antibiotics. Long story short, I eat healthy and continued to but was constantly having severe GI issues and skin rashes. I would be treated with steroids and ointments but the rashes would eventually re-emerge. That being said a friend reccomended I consider having the IgG test to see in the off chance whether or not I had food intolerances/sensitivites. I had a blood draw and about two weeks later I received a panel and was in SHOCK by the results! Some of the items I had severe intolerances too included tree nuts, spinach, apples, malt, buckwheat, shellfish, egg whites, vanilla, pepper, to name a few. The worst was safflower oil. Used in many processed foods, restaurants and as I found this week cosmetics! My doctor recommended removing all the items on that list for a minimum of 8weeks and then slowly introducing 1 at a time every 4-5 days and seeing how I feel, what kind of reaction I have. In that process I’ve also been taking a probiotic and prebiotic. My GI issues have improved immensely in this time but it’s been trickier with my skin as many cosmetics have hidden ingredients that are on my ‘list’ (safflower oil). While this option may not be for everyone, when you are desperate (as I was) it’s worth trying to learn and find out a bit more about your body as it’s the only one ya got! Hope this helps and best of luck!

@alfalfa So were these intolerances and allergies caused by having salmonella?

I can't imagine having to deal with so many intolerances. I occasionally get an intolerance to egg whites but it only lasts a couple of months and then I can eat them again!

I agree, if you are desperate you need to get this type of testing done, rather than going along eating things that will cause you problems.

Being that I have eczema, I will be visiting my dermatologist tomorrow. One Dr told me it’s autoimmune and will likely be referred to a rheumatologist. My sister had rheumatoid arthritis and eventually passed later I’m life. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if I have food sensitivities. One step at a time.

These were intolerances/sensitivities and luckily NOT allergies. I had a rough year and a half of battling food borne illnesses, sinus infections and skin rashes. So I was on strain after strain of antibiotics. I was having terrible GI issues none the less as a result of all the antibiotics but as time went on I still was unable to have a solid stool. I generally felt terrible all the time and would get what I thought was weird bouts of acne. I was fed up with not being able to just go to the bathroom so had that IgG test done to see if maybe part of the problem was what I was eating. Turned out that the majority of Foods I was eating ALL the time were contributing to a lot of my symptoms. I’ve done pretty well at not consuming them but then like this past week I kept eating corn chips and I got a rash all over my chest. The chips were fried in safflower oil 🙁

My son has severe eczema, skin falling off and bleeding. I found if he soaked 5 minutes in Epson salt in the bathtub after washing, then dried off thoroughly, then applied eczema lotion (one with no perfumes or dies for sensitive skin) until it cleared up or whenever it would flair up, it went away faster than any steroid medication. He has a lot of skin and sinus allergies too.

I had horrible eczema on my hands shortly after my son was born. It lasted a few years and bothered me tremendously. No prescription creams helped and the eczema pain and itching constantly drew my attention to my hands. My allergist had recommended eliminating all acid based foods from my diet - tomatoes, orange juice, catsup, anything with citric acid in the ingredient list, all soda. I didn’t want to do this extreme food elimination but it became so bad that I tried his recommendation. Within a week, the rash was gone and my hands were healing. I could bring the eczema back by drinking a glass of orange juice. I was convinced and for about 10years, kept this diet. Over time (it’s been 30years) I’ve been able to add back acidic foods but I’ll never forget this disease and the cure for me.

Thank you for your feed back. I a going to an allergist tomorrow and have started a diet of no sugar, caffeine, and grains. I suspect a leaky gut and have consulted my GI Dr who is currently running test as well as my dermatologist who did two skin biopsies. It’s been a month from hell and am still not finding relief from the eczema spreading to my torso, arms and legs. The itch keeps me up at night and am afraid to even eat. Emergency room visit again yesterday being my arm was swollen and so very painful. The ER Dr took out the stitches and prescribed oral antibiotics. Hopefully the allergist may help cause I’m exhausted!
