Acid Reflux - Natural Remedies? Diet Tips?
Has anyone tried drinking aloe water to help improve acid reflux/heartburn? I am currently trying to get off of a PPI (protonix) and am looking for help with chest pressure leading to heartburn. In addition, has anyone had success with ginger for digestive issues?

The big question here at least for me is,what does your Dr. say about taking ginger? I have seen many people, not necessarily on this forum, suggest taking highly acidic things that would only aggravate ones acid reflux.
Having anyone of these issues is torture. Having to live with all three is hell. As they all seem to be interconnected.
I have all three of of them together. So yep i feel like hell most of time.
This past week I was back at Mayo Clinic for an Endoscope with Bravo test, along with Esophageal Manometry test.
So after a full check of my throat, stomach, plus checking how I swallow, and eat.
I had the tests done cause I constantly experience chest pains, severe heart burn, a chronic sore throat, stomach aches, bloating at time along with on and off diarrhea and constipation.
Right It is 4:30 am while I'm typing, cause I was having my usual chest pains laying down and they are so severe, they woke me up.
So how do you cure this? The game plan is to basically drop 10 pounds. Not that I am overweight, i guess just looking like a scarecrow helps to eliminate the situation.
So what can you eat? Not the stuff listed below.. Which is my typical diet Coffee, I love chocolate, tomatoes, and spicy foods. It's tough having to give up Coffee and chocolate.
If you have gastroesophageal reflux (GER) or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), you can prevent or relieve your symptoms by changing your diet. Dietary changes that can help reduce your symptoms include
decreasing fatty foods
eating small, frequent meals instead of three large meals
Avoid eating or drinking the following items that may make GER or GERD worse:
chocolate
coffee
peppermint
greasy or spicy foods
tomatoes and tomato products
alcoholic drinks
Changing your diet, and the way you have to eat is extremely difficult. It is just as bad as breaking a bad habit. Plus exercising when you feel like hell is not easy to get motivated with. When you experience this disease you are tired, starved and have chest pains, plus have a horse voice and constant sore throat.
Trying to cure this is major life changing event. I do hope I can overcome.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions if you can please share them I would really appreciate them?
Hi, @jackiem95 Jackie, I can't answer your question, but I have one for you. I am going through some lactose intolerance or IBS now. I have an appointment coming up next week with the NP for a gastroenterologist. Apparently, you are also having problems with lactose. How do you know if it's lactose intolerance, or IBS? I am trying to figure that out myself. I suspect IBS because it does seem as if some days I have no lactose yet still have a problem, but then I never sure if some lactose may have snuck into something I ate.
By the way, I tried Kefir one time and hated it.
Thanks.
JK
I have both IBS and lactose intolerance—as well as gluten and fructose intolerance and sensitivities to other food ingredients. I think that this is common among those with IBS. Your doctor should be able to explain all of this to you and if needed, refer you to a nutritionist.
Just a note that the Lifeway brand of kefir is lactose free.
I drink Kefir because I need the probiotics. I am trying to recover from Cdiff so I have to a probiotic. I’m lactose intolerant too & I drink lifeway. They have different have several that are lactose free.
My primary concern at the moment is actually whether kefir could trigger an episode of my acid reflux. I guess it is kind of “fizzy”?
Mine isn’t fizzy at all it tastes like a thin yogurt. Sometimes I mix it in with my yogurt as a shake with my breakfast. I hope I’m hoping it helps me because I’ve been very sick since October on & off with 4 relapses of Cdiff. I just had an FMT transplant. I really need the probiotics & I get some that way.
@sandyabbey @jackiem95 I saw this product in Whole Foods today and noticed that none of the varieties there said lactose-free so I checked one out and it did have a tiny bit of lactose. From experience I believe I could have that if I took lactaid but I know it would give me a slight problem without. I have a friend who is so intolerant that she can’t even have the slightest amount, and lactaid does not help her.
Whole Foods is the only place I know around here that has lactose-free yogurt and cream cheese. Unfortunately the yogurt is not fat free or Greek, bit it’s the best I have seen here.

Where do you live? Is there a Sprouts market there? They have lactose free yogurt, cream cheese and sour cream with the brand name Green Valley. I think the yogurt is low fat but not fat free—but not sure since I don’t have any in my fridge right now. I do have some yogurt made by Yoplait (called Q) that is made with 2% milk and is 99% lactose free. I actually thought that all lactose products were allowed to say they were lactose free if they only have that little lactose. Anyway I am getting off of my original concern about kefir and acid reflux.
