Has anyone been diagnosed with Abdominal Wall Pain

Posted by rufus444 @smiles444, Dec 15, 2017

Starting on May 1, 2017, I began having abdominal pain that wraps around to my left back. The first time it happened, I went to the emergency room because I thought I might have an apendicitis. The hospital did a CT scan of my abdomen, everything looked okay. I went to the emergency room several times over the summer with excruciating abdominal and back pain. I had a hida scan done, a colonoscopy and an endoscopy and CT and ultrasound scans of my abdomen. Everything looked normal. In September of this year, a doctor at Mayo felt the area on my abdomen and did a Carnett's test. He suggested it could be abdominal wall pain. I have had two steroid injections and I am still having pain in the same area. Has anyone out there had this type of diagnosis and still having pain?

RBassett, I was also really hoping for some pain relief on your behalf! Were you given a timetable for this? I've had 4 shots so far that provided noticeable pain relief right away, but the longest any of them lasted was about 4 hours..Thank you for being willing to post your reaction and I hope your treatment makes a difference over time? Just sending HOPE right now--that maybe medical science will start making headway on some cell therapy that will help us (preferably soon). /jpm

juliepm. I am now having severe stomach pain again and was told to take an extra pain pill. but that didn't help and I can't sleep with the pain as well and just not being tired. I'm glad you had instant relief, if for only a few hrs. I had none and I'm running out of options. I'm not sure when my next procedure will be, but having no answers to my chronic pain is getting to me. I wish you the best. RB

RBassett, I'm so very sorry. No luck, no answers, no relief and no sleep! Good God! I had no help with my condition and actually had to come up with my own diagnosis. Not that it helped either the pain or the total lack of compassion from MDs. I can only hope that you find an advocate soon. If it helps to know that someone cares, I DO...Please post sometime if you want.

Hi, I am going on 5.5 years since my first sudden onset of upper left quadrant abdominal pain. I have had many diagnoses and yet it is still a mystery and truly excruciating at times. My pain is 8-9 days out of 10. How often is yours? Can you walk normally? What have you tried that works? I have seen 18-20 specialist. I use heat, a TENs, meditation, pain meds, lying still on a 45 degree angle and a number of other meds. Does the pain cause you headaches and nausea when it gets severe? It has been a 5 year science experiment and imaging studies of all types to still not know what or why. Abdominal wall pain, visceral pain, chest wall pain, chronic pain syndrome, etc. It has been labeled all of these. I have received easily 100 injections in my upper abdomen and wrapping around to my back. So, I feel your pain.

Hi I'm new to Mayo clinic. I've been in pain for over 6 years with no relief! I've felt that its getting worse, I now have nausea, vomiting and pain is so severe I just don't eat! I've lost so much weight, and it's still coming off!

Hi Sandy, please check out the MALS (Mesenteric Artery Ligament Syndrome)on Facebook. You sound like me, with symptoms for many years. It’s MALS Awareness Community and they are very helpful and will help you find answers.

juliepm, No luck with hypnotherapy, but got some relief that only let me know my pain is more than likely incurable and I have to live with pain from now on unless I can somehow ignore the pain. I'm told that CBT and Anti Depressants are the only treatment for now. Not much else can be done.

Have you checked in to Alternative medicine? Try contacting Celebration of Health Clinic in Bluffton, Ohio and ask if they have had experience with this type of issue. They do good work there!

RBassett, thanks for checking in, was wondering what route you were on. I've had pain psychotherapy since June and pain PT. I also started using CBD 1000 tincture with 250 THC--helps some in the night. What I had to learn is distraction and pacing. It helps with the pain. Trying to learn how to manage stress which makes the pain flare up. Somehow it helps to know you're out there & sharing. Thx again

Hi Baz10, I didn't have any luck with alternative med...acupuncture, homeopathy or microbiome supplements. It's not any gastric or digestive problem in any way, it's neuropathy and I haven't heard of any magic for that....

Rufus444, I've had 5 steroid/lidocane or marcaine or buvipacaine injections and they were only temporary at best. Glad you're out there though. Somehow it helps to know there are other patients with the same diagnosis and suffering and maybe there will be something out there that clicks for us? Any European treatments or research? Obviously the Mayo clinic has no help to offer--

Go to a Physical Therapist!! Just get a general referral, and let them evaluate you! You likely have a lot of tightness/issues that you aren't even aware of. The injections usually don't help because it's not as simple as just numbing pain in one very localized area. If your pain is (and I say IF) musculoskeletal in nature, it likely is the entire thoracic muscles/tissues that are affected (some more than others). The therapist can help localize the sources of your problems and help your loosen tightened areas and teach you ways to help maintain that on your own.

I think anyone who has had GI issues for a long time, likely has tightness/tension in abdominal wall, even back muscles, because we tend to 'hold' areas of pain tightly.

See another thread on here that just started about MFR, myofascial release, one technique used by therapists.

Most MD's don't understand or have any clue what PT does. I'm surprised you were diagnosed with a musculoskeletal problem and NOT sent to PT! Ask your doctor for a referral, if he/she won't give you one (I can't imagine they wouldn't), maybe you have a primary care or other doctor who would.

It can't hurt, you will learn a lot of things that are helpful, and if it doesn't help at all, will rule out having a musculoskeletal cause for your pain.
