Other causes of failed PEth test for alcohol abuse?

Posted by gjones1956 @gjones1956, Nov 14, 2017

My daughter undergoes periodic peth testing for alchohol abuse. She fails regularly, although swears she drinks NOTHING. We have reason to believe she is telling the truth. Assuming she is indeed not drinking, is there a physical condition or ailment that might produce positive peth tests? She is 29, has enlarged lymph nodes, some kind of mysterious condition that gives her severe hives, etc. We are wondering if some type of autoinflammation or autoimmune condition might explain elevated levels. Our daughter is FINALLY discussing this with her regular doctor but if it is some unusual condition a specialist will be needed. The reason the peth test is required is due to a nasty custody dispute with lots of allegations of misconduct. I just want to know if there is ANYTHING other than alchohol consumption that can lead to positive test results. Any thoughts or knowledge of cases? Thanks for reading.

@kmg

What evidence do you have to show that the PEth test is not FDA approved? I am trying to find out more about that. Thanks.

It is an”laboratory developed test” (LDT)- clinical tests have more oversight. Accountable to no one.

I really want to talk to ANYONE with a false positive peth test. Slowly this mystery is unraveling, but I need more info to draw correlations.

Hi, @toolsd - it sounds as though you could really use some further input from others who also feel they've had a false positive on a PEth test. Hoping @oledocfarmer @mllangan1 @yorkie0737 @pethmadness @kmg and others in this discussion will have some thoughts on any current concerns you have about your experience with PEth test results and provide some support.

I've removed your contact number for your safety and privacy.

Has your arbitration come to a close yet? If so, how did it come out?

Mike @toolsd, I recently saw an article from Science Direct May 2019 that the test can be affected by washing your hands with an ethanolic solution prior to the PEth test.

“Doctor, I do not understand the results of the test, because I swear I am not drinking alcohol.” Truth or lie?

Thanks for the replies, familiar with the recent study. Getting information is more important than privacy! But thanks fir the concern.

My arbitration is in a few months. Fingers crossed.

I’m in touch with Doc Langan, but not the others so I’m hopeful there.

Also, there’s a nurse Genie, from Atlanta with practically exactly the same set of conditions for her false positive.. have seen her on a few forums, no luck getting in touch yet.

Looks to me as though they’re going to lower the “Negative” from 20 to 10. Not good news.

Wha? Can you point me to some links? I’m finding out how peth can be as sensitive as etg... ergo they need to RAISE the cutoff, or better, quit using it.

Can you put me in touch with others with false positives?

Did you ever get the results clarified? I have an autoimmune disease GBS and I got a score of 279.
