Out of State kidney transplant

Posted by fahmiechao @fahmiechao, Nov 7, 2017

Hello. I am currently listed in California for a kidney transplant for about 6 years. I am wanting to get listed at the mayo clinic because they have a shorter average wait time compared to UCSF. Do i have to do the entire evaluation over again or can i just transfer? What about insurance, will they take my california insurance? I am thinking about moving to Phoenix to help me get a better chance of a trasnplant. How does the entire process work with this?

@fahmiechao, I would like to welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect. I received my liver/kidney transplant at Mayo Rochester, but my home state is Kentucky. You will need to be re-evaluated by each transplant center that you want to be listed with. not due to state boundaries, but because each transplant center has its own specific criteria. It is my understanding that you will not forfeit the wait time that you have already put in.

I am going to attach the link for the Mayo Kidney Transplant Center so that you can find information that will be of most benefit to you. If you continue to scroll toward the lower half of the page, you will find a link for billing/insurance information. And also contact details specific to the Arizona Mayo Campus.

Welcome @fahmiechao! Rosemary is correct, you will need to be re-evaluated by each transplant center that you wish to be listed at because each center has its own criteria. If you are looking to transfer your care to Mayo Clinic, you don’t need to start over. Our doctors will review your medical history and let you know if there are any tests you will need to repeat when you come to visit us. Since you are out of state, Mayo Clinic’s campus in Phoenix, Arizona will complete your evaluation in 3-5 days. Your current status on the list will not be affected and your listing can be transferred to us quite easily.

Our transplant center accepts all major insurance plans, in addition to several transplant specific plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, INTERLINK, LifeTrac, OptumHealth, and more. Please call to our Transplant Outreach Director at 480-342-0904 to discuss further and begin the process.

Best of luck to you in your transplant journey. We hope to see you back on Connect too!

I was listed at Mass General for 2 yrs and retested at Mayo Phoenix. They accepted me and my time from MGH. I waited another year and a half and just received my new kidney Dec 11th 2017! Mayo is absolutely the best. We plan on moving to Phoenix anyway but Mayo is a large part of that decision. My Blue Cross Massachusetts insurance has been no issue. The person who got the other kidney to mine is from LA and they had been waiting at UCLA for 4 years. They finally came here and within 2 months got transplant. Lots of California and Nevada people come here. Good luck!

@kidneyforcricket, Welcome to Connect, and Happy first month transplant anniversary! Thank you for sharing this happy event with us. I can feel your relief and your joy over your new life.

I, also, would like to invite you to visit some of the other transplant discussions. I know that there are many people who are in the transplant process who can benefit from your positive experience.

Am I correct that you are going to move to Phoenix? If so, have you been discharged from outpatient post transplant care? And how are you managing at a distance?
Rosemary
