Taking Eliquis and Metoprolol for A-fib: Concerned about side effects

Posted by damari @damari, May 25, 2020

Just diagnosed. Doctor prescribed Eliquis and Metoprolol. I was wondering what side effects common. I read there is a rare side effect of hair thinning for metoprolol. (take 25 mg 2x day) Also read that Eliquis can sometimes cause some stomach discomfort. (5 mg 2x day) Can either medications be taken in lesser amounts?

I'm sure the multimillion dollar drug companies are preventing a generic. I'm very happy with $52 monthly, but that was after I met the deductible, and next year the deductible is going to be almost $700, and will have to pay that. I'm not sure what the monthly cost will be after that but I know the % is going up. I need to stay on it. It has the least bleeding risks of all of the blood thinners. But am hoping that I will get approved with help before next year when I will have to pay $700. It will drop from Tier 3 to Tier 2 if it is a generic. I might be dead before April 2028, though. I'm 83 now. haha

I have written earlier about my AFib and Ablations when I was 81, my AFib ‘s became more frequent over the years, Brady cardia , tachy cardia on and off.
I got a pacemaker 3 years ago and have not been in the hospital since and feel fine. I am turning 88 and able to live alone.Am very grateful for the medical help I received in all those years.

I take both Metoprolol and Eliquis. I was given a coupon in the hospital for the first month free of Eliquis. Yes, it is very expensive. After reaching my deductible, $350, I pay $52 a month. I have been trying to get help since January with the drug company, but so far, nothing.

I’ve been taking both Eliquis and Metoprolol for almost 10 years and haven’t had any side effects myself. But everyone’s different, so it can really vary from person to person. If you’re worried about dose or side effects, it’s a good idea to check in with your doctor before making any changes. Best of luck with your health.

I'm sorry you still have to pay $52/month for this, but as drugs go today that is generally considered quite modest, and I think that's about 10% of the list price.

Let's see ... Google says that a generic version of Eliquis has been delayed several times by lawsuits and is currently scheduled for April 2028. Generally when this happens the list price is somewhat lower and most insurance paradoxically will pay a little more for it without dinging you just because it is "generic".

@carbcounter Probably delayed due to profit loss in the US. It's available as Apixaban through Canada. discountcanadadrugs, com. $52/month is quite a good price!

That's terrific! The good news is most plans will look at the $52 generic price and pick it up so the patient pays zero or maybe $5.
