Has anyone found a treatment that helps with peripheral neuropathy?

Posted by bigjohnscho @bigjohnscho, Jul 1, 2025

I suspect that everyone on this forum has been searching for a medication that helps their neuropathy and even though you no that all the internet claims are false we continue to waste hundreds of pounds. Desperation is a powerful force. Has any one been fortunate enough to find a genuine treatment. I just can’t believe that there are so many awful people who prey on our vulnerability and knowingly orchestrate such elaborate scams.

I was diagnosed after much testing to figure out what was going on and finally confirmed through punch biopsy in 2021. A reason not found yet, so I’m in the idiopathic group.
I was given gabapentin and worked up to 900mg 3X daily. I now take 300mg as needed, 1-3 times per day. I take a magnesium complex and I would recommend looking into the different types and applying the right ones to your needs. I just recently added ALA to my supplement regiment and haven’t taken long enough to know if that works or not. I was taking Cymbalta 60mg for depression and I chose the drug because it has an on label use for nerve pain. I took this for about 6 months and it really really helped but unfortunately my body was susceptible to some of the negative side effects and I discontinued. I would recommend giving a try. I ended up with dizziness that I could not control so I discontinued. I learned pretty quickly how to well it worked for the pain once I got off of it.
Movement, self care, diet, water and liquid IV are my go tos and seem to contribute significantly in the day to day.
Avoid extreme heat or cold - heat seems to be my enemy, especially humid heat.
Keep your hands and feet moisturized and socks on.
Footwear- comfortable footwear without the over abundant cloud cushioning. I found a pair of barefoot shoes that are amazing, I even used them for hiking in the Tetons and Yellowstone and they were amazing. I didn’t get the severe pins and needles that I would normally get from my regular Merrel and Keen hiking boots.
Stay away from processed foods. They ignite inflammation and trigger flare ups.

Welcome @stinam85, Thanks for sharing your neuropathy story and what has helped you manage the symptoms. I too have an idiopathic neuropathy but only have numbness and some tingling but no pain so there aren't any medications that help with that. I too have several pairs of barefoot shoes that I like around the house and neighborhood but not if I have to walk any distance. I need a tad more cushion if I have to walk longer distances. There are quite a few discussions on supplements for neuropathy if you want to scan through them - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/.

Are your neuropathy symptoms mostly in your feet?

@dennyleo I’ve not heard that. In fact the opposite. I’ve been told the nerves do their best healing at night in any event. They work for me. Only thing I’ve found to offer relief

@graydude Most of us who use compression socks probably do so to prevent blood pooling in our lower extremities, i.e. legs etc. where gravity is a factor. That factor disappears when we're lying flat.

From Web MD: https://www.webmd.com/dvt/choose-compression-stockings

Should you sleep with compression stockings?
For over-the-counter compression socks, there’s often no benefit to wearing them overnight. Taking them off overnight gives your skin a break to avoid damage.
If you have prescribed compression stockings for medical use, your doctor may tell you to wear them overnight. When it comes to sleeping in compression stockings, follow your doctor’s advice.
My own doctor advises NOT to do it. Your own mileage may vary.

Hello @maryl26, Welcome to Connect. I'm sorry to hear that you were recently diagnosed with neuropathy. It can be scary and difficult when trying to find some relief for the symptoms. Probably the best thing you can do for yourself is learn as much as you can about the condition and what treatments are available that might provide some relief. There's no one answer that fits everyone. Here are a couple of resources that you might find helpful for learning more:
-- Newly diagnosed: https://www.foundationforpn.org/newly-diagnosed/
-- Neuropathy Resource: https://neuropathyresource.com/

Were you diagnosed with a specific cause for the neuropathy or did they mention idiopathic?

@graydude Wearing compression socks has been a great option for me at night as I switch off from the Nervive cream from time to time. My Neurologist has recommended compression socks and also agrees that Nevive is a good cream to use for my burning feet at night!

I have been using "theprotocolworks.com" for about sixteen years. It has really helped me. I have recently gotten somewhat worse pain in my hands and feet and may have to transition to drugs . I will continue with the protocol if I do because I genuinely believe it gives my nervous system tremendous fundamental support.

I was using about 2400mg of Gabapentin at one time, didn't like the way it made me sleepy so cut back to 900-1200 mg per day max and am not experiencing the nighttime burning jolts in my feet. Each of us probably react differently to the medications.
