Early stages alcoholic dementia, hygiene

Posted by r24 @r24, Sep 21 9:07pm

I am taking care of my husband who is a lifelong alcoholic, had 2 strokes 6 years ago, suffers from seizures treated with medication, and has early stages of dementia. He is 55 years old and has lately stopped showering regularly. Currently, it's been a week, and no shower. He used to be very diligent about hygiene. It started with lack of shaving, maybe twice a month opposed to daily. The showering is a problem. I don't know what I can do to help him use better hygiene.

Thank you for that honest answer. He is still drinking, although a fraction compared to 6 years ago. I have read some of what is to come, and stopped reading because, dang. I think the advice about legal and financial consultation is solid. I navigated the world of disability income and medical coverage for him. That was a delightful 3 years. But necessary. Now, it is day to day well being and safety that I am dealing with. Thank you for replying.

@r24 since he’s an active seizure patient and cannot legally drive how is he getting he alcohol to continue to abuse? His brain deterioration will not stop unless he stops.
Since he’s been ill for a while I presume he’s on Medicare due to disability? If so and he’s home bound he would benefit from home health care which would include an aide once or twice a week to assist in bathing him. I hope this info helps.
