Anyone else feel overwhelmed by all their medical appointments?

Posted by jacqueline2026 @jacqueline2026, Sep 13 12:56pm

I have been overwhelmed with all the appointments I have. So much going on right now. I’m in therapy twice a week and see a psychiatrist every 2-3 weeks. I just made appointment with a PsyD because she specializes in neurological issues.

Sometimes it’s really hard for me to explain exactly what I am feeling. Sometimes I don’t feel like talking but I get in my therapy appointments and I have a lot to say all of a sudden. I suffer from PTSD, Anxiety and Severe Depression.

Does anyone else feel like this?

@standinginfaith, venting allowed. You have supported so many. We are here now to support you and share your load. You have more than one person can carry at the moment.

I'm so grateful that @jacqueline2026 brought up this topic just at the time you needed it. I can understand your question. With how sick you are feeling and all the doctors appointments you have, how can you make it counseling appointments as recommended by your psychiatrist? I get that.

Let's just start with baby steps first. You're here right now. We're listening.
I also recognize that an online forum may not be enough. If you need to talk to someone right now, there are helplines available 24/7. Don't hesitate to call.

YES!! I have PTSD and go to a psychiatrist.. but I have spent THIRTY hours in ER since the allergist gave me a Xolair shot..I wanted allergy tests, she gave me the shot..and..I have ..I'm going to cry..I'm 72 and childless and have watched 2 husbands die..one dropped dead with a heart attack 30 years ago and one died of cancer 15 years ago..I did hospice for him alone with 3 fractured ribs..(I was alone with each of them..horrible!!) so now..I had my digestive system under control.. 6 year struggle.. almost died once from colitis.. many trips to ER and a couple of hospital stays.. I have diverticulitis, colitis, gastritis and tortuous colon and hiatal hernia..and fibromyalgia and systemic scleroderma..and 3rd stage kidney failure and kidney stones (passed a 10.7 mm last summer .. took 2 months)..so I have a suspicious lump in my left breast..missed 2 mammograms due to being so sick from this shot I got (was supposed to be monthly..both my Mother and Aunt had breast cancer ..Aunt twice) ..missed the new rheumatologist appt 3 times so sick from it.. missed the nephrologist.. we have only 2 ambulances here..and only one has equipment .. the other only has a "barf bag"..(yep.. I had to administer myself a zofran because she wasn't authorized)..one of the large hospitals closed here and we only have one now..it takes 10 hrs ..I got home from and ER visit at 3 AM last week and the allergist had called and had made me an appointment..won't send me my records..doesn't care I am suffering.. can't eat.. sick if I eat, sick if I don't.. wrecked 6 years of "gut work".. I wish she'd just shot me..YES!! I am overwhelmed and struggling... and furious!! I've been promising my blind since birth grandnephew I'd take him to the pumpkin patch and he could feel ALL the pumpkins.. he loves me so much..for 6 years.. well year # 7.. I'm having a colonoscopy nest week.. scared to eat....don't want to have to go back to ER and now I am 3 months late on mammogram..to see if I have breast cancer.. just laying in bed so depressed..I got PTSD trauma from the allergist..and I had waited 4 years to be well enough to see her.. thank you all for letting me vent..I'm crying now...I can't even see my family..missed my 98 year old Daddy's passing and was in the new gastro office last year ..1st appt and got a facebook message from my sister "Mom's not long for this world"..(lost my train of thought when I got that ) and then later in the day while on the phone arguing with urologist about kidney stone.. message "Mom's just passed" at 95..I really wish no after that Xolair shot , I shot myself...I can't do this anymore.. all these DR appts and so sick to make them..psychitrist wanted me to do counseling.. how can I do that.??? It take 5-6 months for this shot to clear your system..I wonder if I'll make it.

I certainly understand. I have always considered myself to be pretty healthy but with the current trend to see a specialist for every little ailment, it can be overwhelming. The initial consult and then they want to see you every 2-3 months can mean 2 or 3 doctors appointments every week. They are not always treating you or finding issues, simply monitoring. I feel like all I do is go to doctors.

You can always say no to frequent appointments. I visit Mayo in Rochester, MN twice a year, but otherwise, keep them in the loop of changes via Mayo portal. I could see a different provider closer to home but the quality drops, then I deal with morons.

When doctors say “monitoring”, honestly I wonder if they truly understand the problem.
Because I work in health insurance, I do not put full trust in providers and will gladly say No to a doctor that wants to see me frequently because I have private insurance vs medicare. Its waste of money.

Oh - oh yes . Between me ( who has the most appointments) and my husband it is exhausting. It seems we never have a week without someone having a procedure or going to a stressful appointment. I wish I could have a positive attitude about it and be grateful we have the opportunity to be treated for our problems but I have too many doctors, take too many medications!!! I am trying to focus on hope that I /we will be able to resolve some issues and work on getting stronger to better live our lives out and continue to be supportive to our family members and friends. We are living in an amazing time when much has been developed but it is clear much could be better. Thank you to all and blessings on all !

I can relate. Sorry for what you are going through. Have had 4 medical appointments in one week.
Am trying to get one week off between, but doesn't work too well.
Am lucky to be able to take a bus to most appointments so my wife does not get worn down.
I have about 15 medical Dr's , specialists, and therapists trying to help.
When one problem gets partly resolved another pops up.
I try to research each condition before appointments so questions can get answered.

I have been dealing with so many doctors appointments I have lost track of which ones are for me and which ones are for other people. I go to appointments for myself and for my twin granddaughter’s I see so many doctors for all types of situational circumstances, and conditions. I have gotten to the point where I feel like I have said the same things over and over so many times I’m not sure what I said to whom or what I didn’t say, and who’s more dysregulated the twins or myself !!
I am starting to get to the point where I don’t even know if I’m gonna be able to keep medication straight. It’s like I’m gonna need another person to help keep appointments medication’s and reports organized.

If you can get a patient advocate to help navigate your issues and the system that might help.

Sometimes not overwhelming
Doctors with too much at once, just stressing
the top three major issues.

Some weeks I spend several hours a day researching
my symptoms and and navigating the systems to go after what I need.

Been through 2 stage 4 cancers. Now dealing with organ damage from treatments.

I do go through depression times when hope for a better future is not in sight.
Wishing you well.:)

Yes. It's coming up on the end of the year, so I need to use up my allotted co-pays and deductibles. I have excellent health insurance, but cramming together all the appointments with all the specialists is a pain. Plus, I have a needle-phobia, and it's the time of year for the yearly shots and bloodwork. As always, I'll lose sleep over anxiety, but I'll force myself through it. A lot of this comes up just for being over 70 y/o. It starts up next week. Ugh.
