At age 80 is it good idea to discontinue Osteoporosis injection Prolia maintaining which have been used 6 years?
Other medicine also have. Some problem and are temprorary
I had my BP under control with supplements, I even had skipped them a week to see. But, then I started with atrial tachycardia which I have to take it and metoprolol for it and my bad heart valves. I am hoping after the surgery and I heal, then see if I can get off them.

If you discontinue Prolia without a plan to mitigate Prolia rebound you will be at risk for rapid bone loss when the immature osteoclasts begin to develop and resume their job of breaking down bone.
Go to the top of this page and in the 🔍 type Lavacot
You will see a series of presentations that he has done on stopping prolia. What is your prescribing physician saying about this??

Mayo Connect members are patients like you and can only share their own experiences, we cannot provide medical advice like you are asking for.
Let's start with Osteoporosis meds first - Prolia contains a warning not to stop without having an approved replacement ready, otherwisethere's a high fracture risk.
As for replacing you BP medication with a beet root supplement, this is a topic to discuss with your doctor because it depends on the med (some you need to taper off) how high your unmedicated BP and other health risks/issues you have. Like @charlotteeb said suddenly stopping a long term drug can cause serious problems.
If you get the OK to try beet root, you will need to begin taking it while slowly reducing (not stopping) the BP med, watching for side effects, and monitoring your blood pressure 1-3 times a day to see if it works.
Supplements are not without their own risks and side effects so make sure to list them , including dosage, with all of your other meds at your doctor's office and any time you are seen - especially if you need emergency care.
Finally, supplements are NOT regulated and tested for safety, and are not required to list any safety warnings, so it is buyer beware.

4 ReactionsHi @dhardhar1234,
A small study showed that beet juice lowered blood pressure by 4-5 points in 15 men, but the effect didn't appear to be the same in women. Here is more information about the study from WebMD http://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/news/20121212/beetroot-juice-blood-pressure
Changing your lifestyle can go a long way toward controlling high blood pressure. Your doctor may recommend you eat a healthy diet with less salt, exercise regularly, quit smoking and maintain a healthy weight. But sometimes lifestyle changes aren't enough and medications are needed. http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-pressure/basics/treatment/con-20019580
@dhardhar1234 - what medications and lifestyle changes have and haven't worked to help you lower your blood pressure? Have you talked to your doctor to see what they think?

2 ReactionsI wouldn't ask here. Please talk with your doctor about starting and stopping medications.

1 ReactionMy comment is beside the point, but I do agree that this needs careful thinking and advice from experts, not people here. My comment is that eating the beets, whole, would be much more beneficial because beets are one of those foods we can only 'rent'. They soften stools and make voiding so much easier, which for many/most aged people is a real boon. At the same time, you do get the nitric oxide, and quite possibly a real and sustainable reduction in BP. Finally, you have to chew them, which helps to feel more satiated, and when they are in one's stomach they take up space....cheaply. Low cal. Helps with weight!

1 ReactionKind of off topic but talking beets reminds me when my kids were little. I love beets so grew and canned them. I would add a little vinegar to retain color (but not pickle them). I thought my kids loved them, too. But found out they only ate them because it turned their pee red!!!

My Stanford doctor took me off Prolia after five years and put me on Reclast infusion. Which I did twice. Now she took me off those as well. Off all med for three years now. No issues. I am 76, female.
