Can open-heart surgery cause a thoracic ascending aortic anuerysm?
I had open-heart surgery in 2015 to remove a tumor from inside my heart. Afterwards, in 2017, my ascending aorta showed up as 3.7 on a scan. In 2024, it was 4.0. Does open-heart surgery cause anuerysms?

Aging and other physiological issues, especially high blood pressure, contribute to aneurysm growth. Open heart surgery shouldn't cause aneurysms, as that's the "gold standard" for removing/treating thoracic aneurysms. There's also lifestyle and physical activities that have an effect. Moderation in all things is important, plus having access to experienced medical support who have an expertise in treating aortic aneurysms.

2 Reactions@ctflyr BP always around 110/60 and never overweight. And I was exercising 3-4 days a week at gym and very active otherwise. Also have always eaten lots of fruits and veggies, poultry and seafood and avoided processed food and junk food as much as possible. Never on any prescription medication except occasional antibiotic. No family history of anuerysms. That's why I wonder about the TAA showing up just two years after my open-heart surgery.
.....could be age-related along with "standard" growth of the aneurysm in years following. Your heart surgery may have contributed to a weakening, but that is only a guess. Possibly an outside opinion from Cleveland Clinic specialists may provide some insight.

1 ReactionAnnieboo: You mentioned in 2017 a scan showed 3.7 and in 2024 @ 4.0. What kind of "scan" in 2017 and again in 2024? I ask this question because I was diagnosed two years ago with a 4.2 cm aorta Root/Sinuses and a 4.4 cm Ascending Aorta aneurysms. One year ago I had a Cardiologist do an EKG. and an Ultrasound, He simply said he had the measurements of the aneurysms from my previous hospital. He was more interested in in my right and left ventrical, which is his specialty. Last month my regular doctor had me go to hospital for a CAT Scan with contrast and when the results came back the doctor said there was no aneurysms. I was shocked after two years of changing my life's routines and loosing two years due to the stress every one goes through with that diagnosis The only explanation is that the Imaging tech totally read the Ultrasound results incorrectly. My doctor gave indications of AAA or Murmur when he ordered the test two years ago. Thats what the tech started looking for and found what was not there. So, trust but verify. Doctors today give each patient an average of 15 minutes time for each visit. The medical establishments number, not mine. So, I have learned to expect less and do my own homework. Good Luck.
