Pacemaker & ICDs: Introduce Yourself & Meet Others
Welcome to the Pacemaker & ICDs Support Group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
If you or someone you care about has had a pacemaker or an implantable cardio device (ICD), this is a great place to talk with others with similar experiences. Here, you will learn from one-another and share stories about surgery, recovery, lifestyle changes, successes, setbacks and what strategies helped other members on their journey.
Take these steps to participate in the group:
- Follow the group.
- Browse topics.
- Use the group search to find relevant topics to your questions.
- Introduce yourself.
Pull up a chair and chat. Why not start by introducing yourself? What type of device do you have? What tip would you share with others?

I did not handle my initial diagnosis well and at the last minute went to see my cardiologist. He had been the Dept head at vanderbilt and he calmly explained to me, “ yes, I have reviewed the stress EKG and you need to proceed”!! Since then, I have become a better patient by becoming a more informed patient.

1 Reaction@bill0996 Excellent advice about becoming well informed. Knowledge is power. Here on Connect, we discourage relying on AI information including ChatGPT, but do encourage seeking information from medical institutions such as Mayo, Vanderbuilt and others. And of course, yoour medical team.
For me my Cardiologist and EP at Vanderbilt have been excellent in answering questions - what few they are. With every visit, I am becoming a more educated patient. What I realize is that very few things are black and white regarding the heart and its electrical system. I now know that with my high RV pacing that this is something to watch. Two weeks ago, I asked my cardiologist about this and he said with my last EF at 50-55 that it appears that my heart is handling the high RV paving %.

I wish I have your EF. Normal is 50-70. Mine is 22%.
You are right on about the electrical systems of the heart and why we need electrophysiologist experience and medical knowledge of the electrical system of the heart.
Looks like you are under excellent care. Good luck but appears you are in good hands.
@bill0996 I understand! I did not handle my diagnosis well, either! When my HCM became dire, my cardiologist said that if I did not have surgery, "Your family will miss you." Yikes!

1 Reaction@jc76 - my best friend died in 8/22 as his EF slowly failed. What I learned from this group is that my electrical problems are minor compared to others. Another best friend with electrical issues is three years into a replacement valve with a pig replacement valve given a five year life expectancy. I have learned to expect the, “well, I don’t know for sure, but if you don’t take this med, go thru this procedure, then….”. My ablation is still holding six plus years later, my ICD is doing what it is supposed to do. Yes, there are side effects with every med, procedure. Etc. - but there are side effects for not doing any thing.

2 Reactions@bill0996 Your post points out the extremely important point that everyone is different. I am sorry for the loss of your best friend, perhaps your other best friend will be the recipient of new knowledge about treating his valve. I know little about pig valves, why a 5 year expectancy? My husband's aunt received a pig valve that worked far longer than that. Here again, everyone is different. It's the Art of Medicine, not an exact science, one of the reasons being our differences. Glad your ICD and ablation are working well.

Totally agree
@bri793 I just looked up when there will be an ICD Zoom support group. On September 24th. Here is the calendar: https://www.4hcm.org/calendar One needs to sign up to get the Zoom link. Here is how you can contact the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association. I would be VERY surprised if they only allowed those with HCM to participate. I had attended this Zoom meeting once when I was asked to lead a Zoom meeting related to something else. It was not a good fit for me....
