Post cataract surgery/worried
I had cataract surgery w/corrective lens August 21, and after two weeks my eye is still blurry, scratchy and uncomfortable. Skin under my eye turned dark black to the middle of my cheek, and that also is still very dark and not back to normal. Visited surgeon twice and he says the surgery went well and my symptoms are not abnormal, but I am concerned because my vision is so poor and reading ability worse than before surgery. Doctor tells me it will improve in time, but I am getting scared because I still can't see clear enough to drive my car. Last night I noticed that when I cover my other eye, I now see shooting bright light around street lights! Is all this normal after this type of surgery? Several others I've spoken to that have had this surgery tell me they see well within days, and none of them had ever heard of getting a black eye. If it truly takes months to see well and adjust to this new lens in my eye as doctor tells me, I can accept that, but I am getting worried. Also, there is a small spot of white at the bottom of my eyeball where there is longer color - doctor says color will return and white spot is medicine he put in the eye and will eventually disappear. I would appreciate hearing from anyone else who might have experienced any of these things after cataract surgery. Thanks for any information you can give me.....

Hello @cherriann, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I'm sorry to hear you are having concerns post operatively.
I had a girlfriend that had a similar surgery and it took her a full three months to get her vision straight. It was a long three months and she was very nervous but her vision post op is better than ever and totally worth the wait.
I would like to call in @jimhd and @joan912, both members who have had cataracts removed. I hope they will be able to fill you in on their experiences.
Thank you, thank you for telling me about your friend's similar vision experience after surgery! I have so worried that I should be seeing better at this point - glad to read my vision clarity at this point isn't unusual. Thank you again - appreciate more than you know!

I would be looking for a second opinion if I were experiencing your symptoms. My vision wasn't immediately great, but I could see fine. I think it was a little blurry for a couple of days, and my old glasses obviously didn't focus correctly until after the second surgery and I got new glasses. What you describe doesn't sound right. Your eyes are too important to ignore symptoms that cause you concern.

Thank you for reply, Jim. I have already cancelled the second surgery. I wouldn't dare go ahead with that until any possible complications with this eye are determined and vision is better. So frustrating that what I assumed was a procedure that would make vision better, at this point has not did that.

My mom is a 66 year-old, a smoking woman for about ~40 years.
- No high glucose.
- Usually with a low blood pressure (normal).
- High self making cholesterol, Treatment of pills.
- Usually a healthy person.
On 29.6.17 she passed a cataract surgery and only after about 3 weeks, she started to see clearly.
during these 3 weeks, she felt some itchings but with no pain. the doctor that made the surgery said that everything is OK.
she also asked for another opinion from a specialized doctor and also he told her that everything is OK.
After about 2 month from the surgery, SUDDENLY, she lost her vision in the In the operated eye.
she said that she felt some dizzy and then got totally blind in one eye.
we took her to the emergency room, then she passed a CT brain , neurological tests, eco test ect.
mean while, after some hours, she started to see only silhouettes, until now.
The doctor's diagnostic is that she passed a "mini stroke" since he saw an obstruction in the retina's blood vessels
and she also smoke a lot...
We have two questions:
1. what can be done in order to make her see in the eye again.
2. can it be due to the surgery? i know that everybody told that there no relations, but to much coincidence make me wander...

Really suggest you make an appointment to see a doctor that specializes in vision and eye surgery. Anytime vision is completely lost I wouldn't suggest waiting for it to come back again. I had cataract/vision correction surgery recently and not seeing as well as I had thought I would afterwards. However, doctor is telling me it takes time for optimal vision to happen after surgery sometimes, but I haven't lost my vision, so have not experienced the same situation that your Mom has. Hope she can see specialist soon and they can help restore vision.....best thoughts are with you, good luck.

1 ReactionI do not know if this helps, but I will share that a Retina Specialist treats issues involving the retina.
I was referred to one by my ophthalmologist when I experienced a sudden loss of vision in one eye. A blood seepage and inflammation resulted in a retinal vein occlusion. I have not had cataract surgery.
The retina specialist has extensive information about retina issues.
