I’m starting Duloxetine for spinal stenosis pain, anyone have success?
My primary care has started me on Duloxetine for my chronic spinal stenosis pain. I felt that the Tramadol was not helping me enough. My pain clinic also started me back on Gabapentin. I do not want surgeries at my age 71, I just want to get to a pain level I can tolerate. I do have a NEVRO SCS which helps with CRPS and small fiber neuropathy in my left leg , but this doesn’t help with musculoskeletal pain and my stenosis pain. Opinions on Duloxetine?

@karentheo Thanks, I have been on all those still weaning off Gabapentin down to 300mg still on 100mg Trazodone great for sleep but sedated all morning. Feel sometimes we are getting fobbed off and its almost impossible to see a GP. Worrying about going to bed has made me anxious and depressed knowing the sort of night I am going to have. How can I get Tramodol ? Told by GP I cant have an opiod whilst on Trazodone and Gaba. But I need a good pain killer. These others do not really kill the pain at night.
Please be careful missing doses because it’ll make you feel like you’re on a 3 day drunk. Your head will spin and hurt and your equilibrium will be all off until you get it back in your system. It is also used for depression. I’ve been on it 7 years and have been slowly coming off it due to the side effects.

1 Reaction@kmoore1277 I'm just starting duloxetine and wonder what are the side effects you've experienced with it and when did the side effects start, if you remember, and don't mind letting me know. Thanks!
@painsurvivor i started it a month ago for my lumbar spinal stenosis at starting dose for three weeks to see if I experienced any side effects. I did not. Then I went on to the maintenance dose and have been for almost two weeks now at this dose .
Occasional “eyebrow headache” as I call it. Which is a normal side effect when first starting this dose and should go away once your system has adjusted to it according to the pharmacy literature I was given with my script . Already I notice a marked improvement with my back discomfort . I do try to watch my body mechanics and not bend down to tie shoes or pick up things from the floor. Avoid twisting at the waist too, helps me. I bought grabbers to pick up things from the floor.
Hope you feel better and have less pain too.

2 ReactionsI would stay away from it. It helps with depression but not so much with pain.
@mslee56 I can now safely speak for myself after having been on it for about three weeks. It has definitely made a big difference in the pain I was experiencing in my back.

@medicalunicorn I didn't have any luck with Cymbalta for either pain or mood but everyone is different.
I wish it had worked.

1 ReactionI have terrible neuropathy in both legs. I was taking 3 300 mg of gabapentin and it was killing me mentally and it bought me a little pain relief but not enough to justify taking it. My doctor suggested cymbalta "duloxetine" as a better alternative. We started with 20 mg to see if I could tolerate it. I was very nauseated for 4 days but I also weaned down to 1 gabapentin at the same time. After two weeks I was prescribed 2 20mg per day. I am still using 1 gabapentin. This has made a significant difference in leg pain that last longer and far less brain fog. I am going to try 60 mg a day in hopes of letting go of gabapentin completely. My doctor said over 60 mg is where you start to feel pain relief. I do yoga stretches everyday and that helps. I also added Gundry olive oil a week ago in the morning and my gut health plus skin and other benefits has been life changing. I did start R ALA supplement two mornings ago for nerve health. I must finally be doing something right because the pins and needles are improving and I am not giving up.
