I’m starting Duloxetine for spinal stenosis pain, anyone have success?

Posted by Mariette R. @marietter, Aug 7 10:26am

My primary care has started me on Duloxetine for my chronic spinal stenosis pain. I felt that the Tramadol was not helping me enough. My pain clinic also started me back on Gabapentin. I do not want surgeries at my age 71, I just want to get to a pain level I can tolerate. I do have a NEVRO SCS which helps with CRPS and small fiber neuropathy in my left leg , but this doesn’t help with musculoskeletal pain and my stenosis pain. Opinions on Duloxetine?

I was on duloxitine (60mg) for many years, along with trazadone and mirtazipine. Did nothing for the pain. Per my doctor, pain will trump any medication like this. The trazadone does help to sleep, as does mirtazipine, which acts as an appetite stimulant. I've lost about 20 lbs since the pain makes me really nauseous. Unfortunately, my chronic lumbar pain makes it impossible to get a good solid night sleep. I've do take 15mg of tramadol which takes the edge off somewhat, but it's considered a lower type of narcotic. Gabapentin 300mg 3x, made me quite loopy during the day so that was stopped. Good luck to you, as I understand the total frustration.

@karentheo Thanks, I have been on all those still weaning off Gabapentin down to 300mg still on 100mg Trazodone great for sleep but sedated all morning. Feel sometimes we are getting fobbed off and its almost impossible to see a GP. Worrying about going to bed has made me anxious and depressed knowing the sort of night I am going to have. How can I get Tramodol ? Told by GP I cant have an opiod whilst on Trazodone and Gaba. But I need a good pain killer. These others do not really kill the pain at night.

Please be careful missing doses because it’ll make you feel like you’re on a 3 day drunk. Your head will spin and hurt and your equilibrium will be all off until you get it back in your system. It is also used for depression. I’ve been on it 7 years and have been slowly coming off it due to the side effects.

@kmoore1277 I'm just starting duloxetine and wonder what are the side effects you've experienced with it and when did the side effects start, if you remember, and don't mind letting me know. Thanks!

@painsurvivor i started it a month ago for my lumbar spinal stenosis at starting dose for three weeks to see if I experienced any side effects. I did not. Then I went on to the maintenance dose and have been for almost two weeks now at this dose .
Occasional “eyebrow headache” as I call it. Which is a normal side effect when first starting this dose and should go away once your system has adjusted to it according to the pharmacy literature I was given with my script . Already I notice a marked improvement with my back discomfort . I do try to watch my body mechanics and not bend down to tie shoes or pick up things from the floor. Avoid twisting at the waist too, helps me. I bought grabbers to pick up things from the floor.
Hope you feel better and have less pain too.
