Hashimoto help, feeling defeated and desperate

Posted by fritztraci @fritztraci, Dec 16, 2025

I have been struggling for many years with my weight having extreme fluctuations, but this past year I have experienced a significant weight gain. I’m 5’ and 190 lbs., six months ago I weighed 160. I restrict what I eat to a hard boiled egg and berries every breakfast, lunch is usually some Trader Joe’s frozen meal or a salad with grilled chicken, dinner is the only time I really allow myself to eat a full meal. With that, my GI is out of control. I no longer like to go out to eat because I have diarrhea very soon after I eat anything with horrible cramping. My periods are so heavy and can last months long. I get this very hot flushing of my face and neck without any activity. My skin is ridiculously dry. I had my thyroid tested and ultrasound of thyroid and gallbladder. My doctor determined I have all markers for hashimoto with a goiter thyroid that is irregular texture, no nodules, my thyroid antibodies were at the highest level on the scale, however my t4 and TSH are within normal though at the very low end, and my doctor just wants yearly blood work. I’m so frustrated and exhausted all the time, I feel horrible physically and mentally, which I started therapy for this because I am at the point of being so depressed that I have lost all motivation, cry a lot, and am just uncomfortable going out! I’ve asked if there are supplements or something for weight loss and just keep being told we just need to monitor because there’s nothing you can do for hashimoto. I just want some help and to feel like myself again. I tried researching hashimoto but there is just so much conflicting information on what to do for it.

I also have Hashimoto's - since 2012. Not on hormone replacement yet.

Do you still have high levels of TPO Ab Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody? My TPO is currently at 190 when normal limits are 0-34, which indicates that my body is still attacking my thyroid in autoimmune fashion.

@altabiznet I was initially up to 756 in 2021. I curently have come down to 133 last lab.
Not sure, BUT I believe...
taking high dose of oral anti-viral med (Valcyclovir 100mg/TID) prescribed by an MD who tested me for viral load (HPV, Epstein Barr, Shingles, Cytomegalovirus ...all related)which he believed reactivated by immune response due to new and current exposure to a virus: Covid. Timeline and history of ailments coincided for me.
Or... I also started Red Light Therapy and PEMF treatments TIW for 1.5-2 hrs.
Or... the combo? Not sure but the downward direction makes me happy I'/m helping my immune system kill the enemy.
Don't give up. Enlist the help of like-minded providers, info sources and God Almighty.

I have had hypothyroidism for 16 years now and just diagnosed with Hashimoto’s less than eight months ago I went to an endocrinologist because my numbers were below like .05 then they’d go to 5.0 then I was really thin and now I’m really fat, but my number is on paper now are good but I feel like crap .so what’s that say T3/T4 conversion not happening or what do you think?

I feel bad for you and I feel also depressed because of this weight gain I don’t understand what’s going on and I can’t get any answers.

I also have Hashimoto’s with Hypothyroidism. Has your doctor asked you to stop eating certain foods like gluten, dairy, soy and seed oils? I would venture to say, no. Those foods are inflammatory and will cause your body to bloat and become inflamed. Try eliminating them for a good while and see if you don’t actually drop a few lbs. I have been eating this way for about 3 years and have lost weight. I also work out 3 times per week and walk 3 miles 3 x’s per week and do light weight training. You should also stop eating anything that’s been pre packaged like frozen meals or snacks in a package or box. They contain sulfites and nitrates and those are awful for us. Choose all fresh fruits and vegetables and try to eat as clean as possible, meaning nothing in a box or bag. Also stay as far away from sugar as you can. Very inflammatory to our bodies. You mentioned you were at the highest number on the scare in your TPO Antibodies. There is no highest number, it goes as high as it can go, so something tells me you’re not too well informed on Hashimoto’s. Do some research and there’s also a great book written by Isabella Wentz, Pharmacist that tells you how to get to the Root Cause of Hashimoto’s and how to treat it simply. Wishing you all the best.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in early 2025 after a bad COVID illness…. I concur with others here that it is very important to stay away from gluten, sugar, soy, iodized salt, and processed foods in box. I’ve learned that I can eat a little aged and hard cheeses like Parmesan, Gouda, and extra sharp cheddar…. I eat unsweetened coconut milk and coconut yogurt (plain) every day, which seems to help my digestive system. I use sea salt and unfiltered, natural honey as a sweetener. My endocrinologist prescribed 50 mcg of LEVOTHYROXINE, which seems to help. I still need to sleep at least 9-1/2 hours per night, plus an afternoon nap, but I feel pretty good otherwise. I suggest finding a good endocrinologist and eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I learned that nuts and seeds are good, so I eat a lot of sunflower seed butter on gluten free bread, with sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds…. I also include lots of salmon, lean turkey and chicken and veggies, and sugar-free natural cereals, etc. I will be seeing my endocrinologist every 6 months to monitor my blood counts, etc. I hope you can take walks outside or find an exercise your enjoy, as moving your body will make you feel better…. Take care!

@lkirnbauer well you think my endocrinologist would’ve told me more about Hashimotos. Is your information from AI or from Google or just plain research? Well, I eat cereal that’s in a box. Sorry I like cereal. I don’t need it often. I do have a problem with sugar because I went to that when I quit smoking so I thought that was a good evening when I quit smoking I can only handle one thing at a time. I can’t do all of it at one time so I just go day by day. I don’t eat a lot of bread or pasta. I’m not worried about the gluten, but thank you for the advice. Yes, I will work on stuff. I have insomnia so I have a hard time sleeping so I’m really tired during the day not real motivated so I’m dealing with that also thanks for the

@mary7026 I got my information from my Endocrinologist and from reading the mentioned book by Isabella Wentz, Pharmacist on the Root Cause of Hashimoto’s. It’s a great book and I learned a lot from her. I was suggesting foods to eliminate so that you feel better. If you don’t want to do that, that’s your prerogative, but you aren’t helping yourself by doing so.

@lkhorton01 I have an appointment in a couple weeks with my endocrinologist numbers were good four months ago, but I don’t care what it says on paper. It’s not how I feel. I think I’m having a problem with the T3 T4 conversion. I do need eye salt because I don’t drink enough water so I need a little bit more electrolytes.
I will admit I do eat too much sugar. I went towards that when I quit smoking 11 years ago almost 12 I have insomnia so I can’t sleep nine hours in the dust too much sleep for me. I can function on seven, but I don’t even get that. my mind can’t stop. I have ADHD going on so along with the other CRPS, sciatica Hashimoto’s.
I try to get my exercising but a lot of days I’m really too tired because I don’t sleep well because of my insomnia and I don’t know what to do about that. I think I need to talk to somebody.. I do take care of the grandkids a couple days a week but ever since I get the sciatic in the CIPS has gotten worse. It’s hard for me to move as quick as I used to.
I do eat some vegetables, mostly salad, salads, and broccoli. I’ve always been a picky eater so can’t deal with certain things. I do have my smoothies, but they’re frozen and make them when I freeze them. That’s my fruits. I’m trying, but I live alone and I guess I need a little more motivation. I have nobody to push me and I’m not very good with myself.

Hello,
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s several years ago . My thyroid numbers are still normal however. Two years ago I was diagnosed with IGA Vasculitis an autoimmune an autoimmune disease which is extremely rare in adults. I have always had ( 30 years) autoimmune issues. I had been on Gabapentin for years but eventually went off as the constant burning and tingling all over my body seemed to get better,
In the last two years the episodes of burning and tingling have reoccurred, sometimes with a vengeance. I when through a full neurology evaluation at Mayo. As usual my results were all normal. I often wonder why Mayo did not follow with testing for small nerve fiber neuropathy which seems more like my symptoms so I may purse that.
They did suggest Lyrica however I was reluctant to do that again as I now take 2000 mg of mycophenolate mofetil per day and the episodes were more sparstic.
I am 5’6” weight 148 exercise daily , eat well and am a 72 year old female . Now… mu A1C is 5.7 so pre- diabetic. It is now more than confusing to determine what is causing these burning / tingling episodes. Getting back to the Hashimoto’s I have notice that when the burning starts it coincides with a raspy voice. I am guessing it is all an autoimmune flare.
I feel frustrated, tired and some days really miserable with no relief from the burning/ tingling through my body. I try to stay positive and remember I do have some stretches of time where I feel really good.
Autoimmune issues are so frustrating as there is often little that can be done, at least that is my experience and I have seen Doctors at Mayo for over 30 years.
If anyone has IGA Vasculitis I would be interested in hearing about your experience and treatment.
One day at a time, find the joy and beauty in the day, belief you are stronger than these pesky diseases and ask for God’s help, strength and peace.
Good luck to all!

@mary7026 Has anything gotten better for you since you last posted? Especially your sugar and insomnia. Are there any workshops near you where you could meet some women and start having a more involved life? I’m thinking of senior centers that are full of activities that I think you would like!

Are you going to an endo doc? I have had Hashimotos for years but I also have pernicious anemia and now autoimmune atrophic gastritis. They're all autoimmune diseases. You can get it under control. Seek out the right doc! Good luck!
