Weight Gain on Tymlos

Posted by dmedaglio1 @dmedaglio1, 3 days ago

I am new here, so apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere. I started Tymlos on July 14. Since then, I have been gaining weight. I do exercise by running or walking nearly everyday as well as strength training at least two times a week. My diet has not changed. (I do indulge occasionally but not regularly.)Has anyone else experienced weight gain? I'm beyond frustrated.

I came off Tymlos SUDDENLY after being on for 19 months on July 4, 2026 (a great, big calcium oxalate kidney stone came on the scene out of nowhere that day, so that was my last TYMLOS shot).

Anyway, I was in pain for a week, had surgery on July 14, and then had a stent in for another 10 days. I didn't eat much during that awful month of July and lost a LOT of weight, which really disturbed me. Reading your question just now made me realize that my bigger-than-expected-weight-loss (from being sick with a kidney stone in July) may have actually been largely due to coming off of the medication. (My set weight of 134-ish might dip to 130 or 131 if I'm ill for several days, but I haven't seen the scale reading 128 since middle school and I was really troubled.)

Almost everyone gains weight on Tymlos especially around the waist. I read that it is the calcium that keeps our fat cells from undergoing natural cell death. I hear that it goes away when you stop the medication, but it takes a while. It happens with Forteo, too. If people tell you that you are just eating more or exercising less, don't listen.

@gently thank you for your post. It's unfortunate we find out these types of side effects on forums such as this rather than in the medicine's literature. Had I known weight gain was a side effect I would not be taking it.

I’ve been on Tymlos for 3 months and haven’t gained an ounce. I’ve read on here about the potential for weight gain, so have expected it to come, but it hasn’t. I’ve increased the protein in my diet to support bone/muscle growth, but that’s the only real change.

I hope you find an answer.

@annie208 I'm sorry to hear about your kidney stones. I have read that they are a possibility. The scale keeps going up despite my diet and exercise. I have a follow-up soon and may need to seriously consider not taking it anymore.

@bharris202 thank you for response. That is awesome you haven't gained any weight. It's been very frustrating for me. I've actually been more active because I have been increasing my running mileage. I indulge occasionally but there's really been no drastic changes in my diet. I know without a doubt the doctor will say, since I increased my exercise I'm probably overeating. That is not the case because I'm eating the same as I have been for years.

Even if it helps your bones significantly?

@dmedaglio1 I had another thought! With the additional running that you’re doing, do you think you are putting on additional muscle? Muscle weighs more than fat, so that could easily explain some weight gain. I’ll bet it’s muscle.
