Eczema started at age seventy?

Posted by ray70 @ray70, Aug 21 4:43pm

I'm sure that my immune system has been compromised.. i have severe flare-ups of Eczema and inflammation that I never had before. I was healthy and active until this began about a month ago, and it is wreaking havoc. In short, i'm confused and miserable.

It happens. It happened to me, started age 71. I've been on Dupixent for 3 years now.

Starting to experience eczema and inflammation is a horrible and worrying experience, made worse by the seeming lack of understanding and ways to return to previous health.
I have both and like you think it stems from compromised immunity and, it seems, and ever increasing number of allergens that cause flare-ups to either my skin or gastric tract (dermatitis from the adhesive on band-aids is the latest).
Have you any idea what caused or how your immune system was compromised?

Have you had your doctor check for biomarkers of Sjogrens? It has a lot of symptoms.

@ray70. @renae Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! You’ve come to the right place. Lots of members will answer your questions and tell what was good/bad from their own experiences. Are you currently seeing rheumatologists for treatment? If you can’t get an appointment, call a dermatologist for help with the eczema and inflammation.. . . Even if it’s just short treatment. Explain that you have an upcoming appointment with a rheumatologist. Things are not usually done this way, but your misery is too much.

I had my first case of excema at age 75. No idea why except maybe declining immunity with age.

About four years ago at age 80 I was diagnosed with Eczema and Bronchiectasis around the same time. Both are related to inflammation from what I understand.

I know for a fact that too often in my life I was subjected to extreme stress for months and years at a time and that my immune system was compromised. I think eventually the body tells us it has had enough .........and shows it with things like inflammation and the results of it.

I do not have the itching or burning just dry scaly skin on the arms and legs. Last year a small amount started on my forehead and that was after my forgetting about staying in the sun for too long. It was bright sun and hot. I was told by my dermatologist to use the Cera Ve moisturizing cream 2x a day. It helps to control the dry scaly skin for me.
This summer I have not allowed myself to be out in the sun unless getting in and out of the car to get somewhere. For me it has made a big difference of which I am surprised. My legs and arms aren't near as bad, meaning hardly scaly like the first couple of summers when I didn't grasp fully understand about sun exposure for me. Winter is also better for me and that was a surprise for the dermatologist.

My thoughts are we can have different degrees of a health problem with some having an extremely mild to extremely bad condition and different things trigger the degree of the problem and flare-ups for each of us.

Life sure changes when these things happen and it doesn't help when one is up in age with all one deals with that come along with the number of years of walking this earth.

I really have no idea.. i went to a clinic for a rash, contact dermatitis was the diagnosis. Dose of steroids to knock it out and some prescription cream as well

Steroids worked for a week, rash slowly came back.\n And now my skin is a battle zone. I retired two months ago and it's a good thing because there is no way that I could work
