Has anyone been taking Mirtazapine? Like to know if they have taken themselves off and how did you do it?

I have had a bad experience with Mirtazapine. I'm in my 80s. My doctor prescribed it for broken sleep & it helped with that although it took hours to wake up in the morning. After a few days of taking it, my feet, ankles, legs and hips became swollen. I had a normal CT scan and the consultant put the swelling down to Mirtazapine.
Over the next three or four nights I took half a pill (7.5mg) and the swelling reduced a bit but I woke in the night drenched with sweat and some nights had to change my nightclothes twice. After three days of this, I had diorreah coloured black.
Two night ago I came off the drug completely and slept fine but still woke up drenched in sweat. I also feel depressed and weak. I'm resting, taking liquid replacement powder and will persist like this until the slight swelling I have goes away - and I believe that I won't take prescribed drugs again.
My daughter is helping me to look into Magnesium supplements for better sleep.

Hi

I've just started taking mirtazapine (15mg, about a week) and I'm really struggling with the tiredness (I've slept all through the night, about 10 hours, and still had to nap in the afternoons) and mood swings, particularly rage and anger for no reason. Has anyone else experienced this?

@armardi373 hi not rage but did feel weird and almost poisoned by aftertaste and dry mouth feeling groggy. I am just trying to stay off it but struggling even after only 3 months. Started 7.5 went up to 15 for a month but felt very Anxious and panicky - tapered back down to 7.5 then 3.75 stopped three nights ago but can’t sleep more than four hours and have hot skin flashes. Don’t want to return to it but GP does recommend at least six months and said I was stopping against medical advice. It’s a very potent antihistamine drug certainly you out but I don’t want to feel so drugged

@armardi373 I have been on 15mg for several months. I started at 7.5 and was groggy then my doctor upped me to 15. It took 2-3 weeks to get used to it and grogginess stopped. I’m also on a couple of other medications so anger hasn’t been an issue unless there’s something I really am mad about. I started it because of depression from grief so anger comes pretty often with that. But I think it takes some time to get the benefits of mirtazipine.

@dennismm lower dose helps you sleep at 7.5 or 15 - over that is for anxiety and depression

@zelenkobooks
Purpose of 45mg is to help sleep and to keep temper at bay.
Doesn’t work on either count!!

If you took it for more than 6 weeeks and it isn’t working it’s time to change the course.
