What is the best probiotic to take while on triple antibiotic therapy?

Posted by corina3892 @corina3892, Aug 15 6:41pm

I was just diagnosed with pulmonary MAI after a biopsy. I will be on a regimen of Rifampin/Ethambutol/Azithromycin for 12-18 months. I want to avoid a yeast infection(s). My reading states there are two probiotics: Saccharomyces boulardii and lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. I am leaning toward the Saccharomyces bollardii as it cannot be destroyed by the triple antibiotic. I do not see the pulmonologist until the end of the month, but I want to be prepared with questions. Suggestions?

@corina3892 Hope this is not common but with iHerb buying Vitacost there are some changes.
"Kroger" no longer owns them.
My order was messed up by them. I double checked all information I was inputting.
First order went to the Bronx rather than OKC. Finally messaged to say where is it.
Outcome. They refunded the money and had to reorder all and make sure they applied and gave the the original 20% off coupon. They took forever to get the second order out.
That meant it took two weeks to get what I needed in two days.
Just be aware....
and know they appear to no longer take telephone calls.....e mails now.

@blm1007blm1007 Oh I hope they don't change! I get my probiotic and Vitamin D from them as well as my husband's pickleball cocktail. They've always been fast and accurate. I just ordered yesterday and was notified the order shipped so hopefully it arrives and all is correct.

I have also looked on the iHerb website. My drug regimen will include Rifampin, Ethambutol, and Azithromycin for 12-18 months. The literature suggests both Saccharomyces boulardii and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, and some lean toward recommending the former, since it is a probiotic yeast rather than a bacteria, so it will not be killed by the antibiotics I will be taking. I see my pulmonologist in 2 weeks and I want to have all of my questions lined up. I will start the treatment at that time.

I’m curious and would appreciate if anyone has or knows if you can take both probiotics (saccharomyces boulardii and Lactobacillus rhamnosus at the same time? I have recently had a flare up and had bronchitis and pneumonia that required 4 different antibiotic therapies over last 2 1/2 months. I know my poor digestive tract needs some repair. Thanks for any suggestions.

@patti55 When I asked my friend's daughter, a nutritionist, about taking multiple probiotics, she suggested alternating doses. She said when she recommends probiotics to patients, she often selects two or three and has them alternate.

I ate a variety of yogurt that I bought at Walmart never got a yeast infection. I took those antibiotics for 2 years. I had was in the hospital had had a heart attack and the lung Dr at the hospital came and had a long conversation with me. I was having vision issues my, increased heart issues, had went from 160 lb to 129. I had no appetite had to make myself eat to live and had no energy. He said in his opinion the antibiotics were doing more damage and my Mac had not improved. I know different people react to medications differently. I have been off them for 2 1/2 years. I do some home remedies that may or may not help. I did go for about a year where Mac didn’t show up in my sputum cultures. Just found out in the last few weeks, it was positive in the last sputum culture,
Praying that you have better results and fewer side effects than I did.

@mjb24 Hopefully that was just a one in a million problem. However waiting that long was a problem because I was out of one or two of the supplements. Lesson learned.

I have been taking California Gold Lactobif 30 since starting the meds and have had no issues. I buy these at iHerb.com and find the price very reasonable. I make sure not to take any antibiotic 4hrs before or after taking the probiotic.

@kasper1 The reason for not taking a probiotic at the same time as we take an antibiotic or too soon afterwards is to prevent the antibiotic from destroying the good bacteria from the probiotic before it can reach our gut.

@patti55 The probiotic I take has 7 different bacteria in it. I would talk to your pharmacist or go online to see if you can find one that contains both.

@kayelynn My first treatment for MAC failed in 2021. Symptoms recurred within a few months. My pulmonologist retired telling me "no follow up needed". I waited 3 years to find a new pulmonologist. I am now allergic to most antibiotics so not a good candidate for tx ( I am 81). I have developed bronchiectasis with shortness of breath and night sweats) Now I have a good pulmonologist and a terrific ID doctor - they are monitoring CT scans and have added nebulizing tx with saline and levalbuteral to Previously ignored airway clearance advice. I admit to ignoring routine medical issues for six years due to caregiving for husband who recently died from Parkinsons Disease. Now I am paying attention to nutrition, exercise and airway clearance and frightened of getting a secondary lung infection. This is a cautionary tale for you caregivers out there - you must take care of your health - find a way to do it. Long term caregiving is a risk factor for exacerbation of chronic disease in the elderly. Best wishes to all - your advice has helped me.
