Reclast side effects 3 months post-infusion

Posted by kaa1 @kaa1, 4 days ago

I received Reclast Infusion in May. I had a horrible flu reaction for a few weeks, even though I took all the recommended steps to minimize that. Recovered from that, but I notice the last month or so I unusual stiffness in my low-mid spine, upper thighs and groin, neck, and thumb/wrist of one hand. I have had neck issues and arthritis diagnosed in my hand previously , but it’s worse now. I teach yoga and practice a lot and I definitely have noticed a significant difference in my range of motion. It’s taken me a while to figure out that this may be a side effect of the medication. At first I thought it’s from turning 65. I sent a note to my doctor through the patient portal, I really doubt there’s anything that can be done about it but wanted to post and see if others are having this experience. And any suggestions most appreciated. Thank you.

I don’t have a link to his books but here is where he is at now…he was at Dartmouth for a long time. A friend of mine was a research nurse in his lab and is now a PA.

Here is a link to his publications…he is the best…very smart and he really cares about his patients. I gave him a very hard time but he convinced me to do what at the time was thought to be hocus pocus medicine…now those doctors who have kept up to date and in the know follow the guidance

Osteoporosis and its treatment have a lot of conflicting information involved I think...some docs don't do bone markers for example, some do, bisphosphonates as first treatment, some choose anabolic instead, some send you to PT, some just suggest exercise with don't jump, don't lift too much and yet some say high impact, lift a lot of weight, some do basic CMP bloodwork, some do more complete (like a 24-hour urine testing for calcium I believe among other tests). Then there is DEXA...with TBS or without, REMS some say good test, some say don't do it. Then there are supplements...Calcium how much, Vitamin D or D3 and how much, Boron, magnesium, vitamin C for collagen and the strontium debate. Then there is nutrition - enough protein, what about collagen addition, protein powders, etc. And if you have any other issues, it does get real crazy. I have avoided dairy for years on advice of my gastro (IBS) but my endo said to up the dairy for calcium plus a 1200 calcium supplement.

@jozer Yes, the whole thing is madness. I opted for Liftmor and increased protein/calcium diet. Declined all medication. I've never been happier.

Guess it depends on how bad off you are. Great for osteopenia or maybe mild osteoporosis but many are finding out this is not a one size fits all disease treatment

Yes. at 67 I was just diagnosed with severe osteoporosis (-3 dex score on lower spine). I have to say I was in shock for a solid month. Read everything I could on the medicines and everything else. Nice that a lot of people do not suffer any side effects. But I just wanted to go a different route. What I did find interesting is that many women who do not have osteoporosis fracture as well - So really it's the falling that is the crucial key. The liftmor helps with balance and strength throughout the entire body. For me that's a win win.

I had bone pain while on Fosamax; doc had me take a 2-week holiday twice during that year. Fosamax was suggested after first appointment with endo April 2025 after dexa scan showed osteoporosis. Had a Reclast infusion July 2026; handled it fine BUT have had on and off bone pain in various body parts for roughly 8 months. Started to clear up; currently very little bone pain (due for second Reclast infusion but not yet scheduled). Doctor said bone pain not from Reclast. But while on fosamax (another bisphosphonate) he had me take a break due to bone pain? Drug literature says it is a side effect, so ?

@jozer Similar story. I started getting joint pain at month 5 of Evenity and it increased to month 9 when I quit. I followed up with Reclast which I had taken before with no problems. But...within a day the pain in my right wrist increased significantly then my left. Fortunately, like your experience, the pain decreased over a year or so. I have a good 80-90% recovery. Of course, I'm in my late 70's so some could be aging. I took weekly Actenol after that. I figured with its' 30 day half life if there was a problem I could just stop. It didn't bother me. I'm on a drug hiatus now and I'm seriouly considering taking only Forteo or Tymlos, bone builders, if I take anything at all.
For what it is worth, most people have no or very little problems with Evenity or Reclast. It just varies from person to person.
By the way my spine improved from -3.9 to -3 but more importantly to me the trabecuar bone density, measure of bone quality, went to normal. So a good result.

@ann707
How was the trabecular bone measured and if you recall from what to what did it improve? Thx
