Priming Tymlos pen?

Posted by jopat @jopat, 5 days ago

Hi, I've read through lots of posts about starting Tymlos at a lower dose and that's what I'm going to try. One question I can't find the answer to: the directions say to prime the for the full dose. Is that ok to do if I plan to start with 4 clicks? Or should I also prime with only 4 clicks? Thanks in advance for any advice!!

@cathyf31 my Tymlos pen only works from the priming mode. It never switched to a number. I called the Tymlos Clinical educator, but my registration has gone through yet. I did that last night. I had to leave a callback number, so now I am waiting to hear from the specialty pharmacist.
They will probably want me to come see them.
The whole thing is a hassle.

@alidamc The 80 that appears is the only number you will see (when you twist the green dial all the way, which is 8 clicks).

@njx58 I am doing it correctly. I thought priming mode WAS setting it to 80.

@alidamc "Priming" just means you release the first dose on a new pen without injecting it. Here's the process for a new pen. Apologies if this seems ridiculously detailed, but I want to make sure that we're all clear on what is happening with your pen. 🙂

1. Put a new needle on the pen.
2. Pen says zero. Turn it to 80 (which is the maximum dose)
3. Press the button to release the first dose. (I used to do it over the sink just in case.)
4. Pen says zero again. Turn it to 80 again.
5. Give yourself the injection.

Repeat 1,2,5 every day.

@osteopatient2026 I don’t know. I will try to find out. A few time I did it on my upper leg thigh. My APRN really didn’t give me any instructions. She just said to google and I would find the injection instruction video. I am so skinny, I don’t have much fat to inject. I only weigh 106 lbs so finding a place to inject is difficult for me.

Normally almost anywhere you have some extra subcutaneous fat is okay for other meds but there are some particular reasons why Radius Tymlos guidance is lower abdomen only 2 inches from belly button and or scars like an appendix scar. The abdomen is one of the largest per square inch areas of subcutaneous fat aided in better absorption of the drug.
John’s Hopkins says:
The abdomen is a common site for subcutaneous injections due to the layer of fat present, while the flank is less commonly used and may not be as effective for certain medications. It's important to follow the guidance from the drug manufacturer…they will have instructions on the best injection sites.

I also time the needle withdrawal for 10 sec. Thanks for clarifying this matter.

@john78109
This tip is important because of the “back pressure” after inserting the needle and pressing the plunger it takes a bit for the medicine to completely be released subcutaneously.

@osteopatient2026 One thing I didn't realize the first time I tried the pen: when you press the plunger all the way down, you can stop pressing. It stays down. That makes it easier to count to ten.

@njx58 I don’t count to ten. I plunge it in and get it over with. The fact that I am even using a needle to give myself an injection is a small miracle. I take anti-anxiety med before I do it because it is so difficult for me.

You might not be getting necessary dose to be effective doing that. Can you get a volunteer to help give them to you? I understand I’m lucky I have my husband do them for me…I’m not sure I could do it either.
