Metoprolol: Are you experiencing side effects?

Does anyone take metoprolol and are you having bad side effects?

@anonymousanonymous I am sorry. I wish that you had gone to a COE for HCM, center of excellence. Those that do surgery do many, many, many septal myectomies. The outcome from expertise and experience cannot be matched. U Penn is not far from Allentown.

Thanks, I never heard of those things. I had been cardiac doctoring with LVHN for 7 or 8 years before hand.

Way to late now. I was all alone with the demons. My insurance probably wouldn't work out of state anyway. My surgeon was billed as the second coming in LVHN. Over 100 SM's and not one death on the table. Lucky me 😭😭😭

You just keep doing everything you need to do to get all your ducks in a row. Then you do what you have to to take care of yourself.

Don't count on anybody else I have found that out to be very true. The diseases like we have, we're on our own. Best of luck and thanks for the hugs and the posts and asking about how things went with me.

It was definitely a defining moment in my life 7 years ago. I am absolutely not the man I was back then. I still don't know who the hell I am. But I know something definitely changed in me after that surgery. Covid-19 in early retirement didn't help either.

Anyway, I am still alive and I am sorry if I'm scaring you. Everyone's different. Probably for every horror story you read you're going to read a good story.

Just remember you are going to have your chest opened up, your bones cracked and spread open much further than they were ever meant to be and a surgeon, in my case anyway, went in there and pulled out my heart and held it in his hand while he gave me a septal myectomy and then he had to put everything back together the right way.

When you look at it that way it is an absolutely insane thing to do to the human body. But then again, so is dying. That is really rough on the human body too. Haha. I have developed sort of a darker sense of humor then I had before but I have not lost my sense of humor. I hope you have one, you'll need it. If not try to develop one it will help you in your recovery a great deal.

I remember when I was in a cardiac rehab there was a guy there and he was like 20 years older than me, in his eighties I believe {I was 61 at the time} he said he had no pain at all and that it went really well for him. He had a speedy recovery with no pain and he made the surgery sound like he went in to have a broken hand set or something like that. I looked at him and almost called him a bold face liar. But I didn't.

I said good for you my story is not like that. Best of luck to you whatever you decide.

@anonymousanonymous U Penn is in PA. Others will learn from your experience AND you can be a vocal ambassador. My Medicare Advanyage Plan has a local network, b
ut septal myectomies are not done within this network. My plan is what my former employees selected for their retirees, and I went to Mayo. Another life learning experience - ALWAYS call both the hospital you want to go to as well as your insurance company. Never, ever assume.

@texan1 Do look into a place such as Mayo. The success rate for septal myectomies at a highly rated Center of Excellence (COE) is superb.At Mayo it's 99+ percent. There are a few other places with nearly as good results. On the Hypertrophic Myopathy Association website 4hcm.org there is a list of COE's and going to one should be the highest priority.

I was diagnosed with hcm 4 years ago after an echo and dna blood test. Nothing was done then, but recently had more testing and now I was told I need a pvc ablation. Scheduled it for next month. Was put on metropol which I cozkd not take. Dr. Stopped it. I. Have. A bad stomach and usually. cannot. Tolerate meds. Scared about the ablation and if there is anything else I can. Do which. Will. Get. E. Off. Any. Need. Fir. Meds. Have terrible. Anxiety about. All. This.

Thanks, everyone, for sharing your experiences with Metoprolol. I also posted a question about increasing dizziness about 10 days ago. After reading so many helpful posts on this site, I’m wondering if my dizziness is a side effect of Metoprolol or hocm or both? Some have said that their dizziness w/ Metoprolol eventually goes away…I wonder how long until that occurred? I’ve been on the drug for almost 5 mos now - seems long enough to adjust to the med. I’m scheduled for a consult at Keck USC in early Oct & am hoping to receive good advice re meds or surgery.
