Any non fracture members?
I guess I’m just looking for some encouraging words. I was diagnosed in February and still working through the different stages of grief/loss. I seem to have more days stuck in depression/sadness.
So, was just wondering if anyone on here has dealt with OP for quite a while and hasn’t fractured? I know you can fracture even if your scores are osteopenia range. I feel like everyday I’m just waiting for a fracture to happen. Im exercising 6 days a week and watching my food intake. I’m just hoping as time goes on this feeling lessens. Sometimes I’m not sure if it’s the diagnosis that’s making me sad or just the fact that I’m getting older, I’m 60, and reality has finally set in.

1 Reaction@researchmaven Definitely a good philosophy…just wondering what drug you’re actually taking with no day to day side effects? Thanks so much
Regards,
Pam
@stress101 I can understand your being stressed.
I will be 83 this week and am choosing not to take any more meds other than Vit D with K2, Calcium and walking on the treadmill 40 minutes each day.In the past I did five years of Actonel and three years Reclast imfustions I tried other meds and could not tolerate them, thus my DEXA scores from my hip remain the same -.3, neck at -2.3 and spine -2.7. Neck and spine did improve. What I am understanding is once taking Evenity you have to continue with something else and pray for no side effects. What was not pointed out to me until I read what others have posted, is that being small boned my numbers could be overstated, since I have not had a TBS reading with my DEXA. I called the clinic to make sure their equipment was capable to give that score too. Aging out is what makes my decision today. All I can do is the research, read what has worked and not worked for others and let go and leave the rest in God’s hands.

3 Reactions@lylii I just read your post and I am not angry, I agree with you. I have begun to feel the same way. I was diagnosed with osteopenia so long ago that I don't even remember when it was. I was put on Fosomax but would up quitting it on my own because of bad heartburn and nausea. Fast forward to this year and my most recent DEXA showed osteoporosis of the femoral head. I tried Fosomax again because now it was available in a once a week pill but the same thing happened. heartburn, nausea and this time miserable vomiting. I quit taking it again. I also have a chronic pain disorder that makes it very risky for me to try any of the drugs that can cause painful side effects. After doing my own research and reading the posts on here I have decided that I do not want to start on anything yet. I will wait until my osteoporosis is severe. I had 4 fractures during my osteopenia period but all of them healed well and my endocrinologist said they were not related to my bone density problems anyway. So just want to say thanks for your post, it has helped me have the courage to say 'no'.

4 ReactionsIn response to the question of rudysmom, I am 73, and was diagnosed with osteoporosis when I was 51 years old. Thankfully, I have not fractured. I started on alendronate from 2004-2010, went drug holiday from 2010-2019, then back to alendronate from 2019 to early 2025. None of my doctors were tracking, and I did not know any better about limits on the use of alendronate until last year. My doctor put me on Tymlos in June 2025 with the most horrible side effects which I have previously written about. Stopped Tymlos in October 2025, then doctor put me back on half-a-dose of alendronate in November 2025. I decided to stop six weeks later and have no plans for returning to any osteoporosis medications (or that doctor). I have "used up" the allowed time for antiresorptives (alendronate); I will never try Tymlos again or Forteo for that matter; I can't take Evenity or any medication that increases my risk for vascular disease because of a strong family history on having this disease; and my oncologist would not allow me to go on HRT because I had breast cancer in 2000. Because there are currently no viable options for me in the long-term, I have chosen not to go on Prolia. I am managing my osteoporosis through improved nutrition, supplements, and Onero. In May 2026, my CTX score was 241 and my P1NP was 35.4---both very positive outcomes. Although my most recent DEXA scan shows severe osteoporosis for my hips (-4 T score) and osteopenia for my spine, a REMS scan last January showed a low five-year risk of fracture on my hips and femoral neck (3-5%) despite the -4 T-score on DEXA, and a slightly higher risk for my spine (5-9%). Although I have been doing DEXA scans since 2004, I don't trust it completely, especially given my very small frame. This is why I did REMS, which is far more reliable (it is not covered by insurance). In fact, the T-score results and fracture risk information provided by REMS are not aligned with the results of my DEXA scan's T-scores. If you are concerned about fracture, you might consider getting a REMS scan. The REMS scan results (along with the results of relevant blood tests) will provide you with information which you and your doctor could consider as you think about a way forward.

5 ReactionsHi there, I just turned 45 last month & was diagnosed with osteoporosis years ago when I was 30. I don't even know if I ever had good bones. I remember when my doctor called me about my diagnosis I started crying & was totally depressed for some time but then accepted the reality & moved on. I didn't do any meds until now that just started Forteo this week. Never had any fractures or other issues.
This diagnosis at 60 & exercising daily would be my dream. I think you're doing just fine. Best of luck to you!

2 Reactions@frog100 Thanks for your reply and understanding. It’s difficult being this toad of bone meds has no ending. I’m willing to be healthy as I can and live with my risk instead of still having risk and being unwell taking drugs. I may change my mind if my pain ever stops but as of now, I’m done. Again thank you and God bless.

1 ReactionQuestion for anyone - is there not a difference between fragility fracture and regular fracture? I have osteoporosis currently but was told in the past a DEXA isn't done until the magic age of 65 (15 years post menopause for me) or if you should fracture. I broke my wrist a few years before age 65; the surgeon who put it together with plate and pins said my bone looked great and healing was basically perfect. I asked him about a DEXA and he didn't think it was necessary. I did not pick up something and spontaneously break a wrist. I was in a car wreck and the airbag broke it; emt and ER doc said they see this type of break all the time. Is there a difference in how fractures are perceived (traumatic vs fragility) or is everyone who breaks anything in any way after a certain age considered osteoporotic? After wrist healed my PC sent me for DEXA scan, and numbers did show osteoporosis, which I am treating. Seems odd to me that all fractures are considered equally. My nephew broke his wrist falling off a scooter (age 27) and did not get a DEXA...

Hello! I have been on the brand name Atelvia 35 mg, weekly, for 10+ years with a one-year drug holiday after 5 years. It doesn't roll back my osteoporosis. It does make me "stable" according to my specialist, who has retired.
Note that with it, and especially the generic version, you need to drink a lot of water with it -- 1-2 full glasses,. or it can be harsh on your gut I warm the water to make it go down easier.
@jozer, the real difference is a fracture that wouldn't have happened unless you have osteopenic or osteoporotic bones.
The medical definition of a fragility fracture is a fracture resulting from a low energy fall from a standing height or less, or a fracture from some minor stress, like coughing that wouldn't normally cause a fracture.
You have a good PC.
