I have leakage around the sides of my incontinence pads .6

Posted by rruben02 @rruben02, 6 days ago

I am 74 and quite active. I have had surgery, RT after recurrence and then more Rt and hormonal therapy after spread. The Teena incontinence pads that I use leak around the sides when i exercise or lift the grandkids. And now i
am staining chairs when i sit without even knowing. The adhesive is not good and they tend to crumple up.
Is there a better pad or will pull ups be better?

Sounds like you are not quite ready for "pads" alone. I would recommend wearing a full Depends or Tena pull-up diaper brief AND a thin Depends "Shield" inside of the diaper brief. You'll add that extra bit of absorption, and have more protection from the diaper as the Shield absorbs its maximum. You could also try your Tena "pad" inside the Depends jockey-style diaper brief, but that may get a bit tight and uncomfortable, despite the maximum available absorption. Good luck to you.

Yes, try different underwear. I changed to boxer briefs, which are tighter across your legs than regular boxers, and have more coverage than briefs. I came to like Duluth Trading Post Bullpen underwear because it has a pouch that helped keep the pad in place.

I have used the Walgreens Certainty Mens pads level 5 and they have worked well for me unless they are seriously over taxed. I was down to a small pad after my RARP and Salvage radiation, but then I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. The two TURBT procedures and six chemo instillations by catheter have seriously affected my continence. I have relied on the Walgreens pads daily since and they have worked for me 98% of the time. If I have had a lot of liquid, I will put one of these pads in a pair of Mens Walgreens Certainty underwear and that has worked for me.

Here is the 100% fix for leak issues with pads. Wear a jock strap. It has worked 100 percent of the time for me. I have no leaks at all. None. Zero. It's that simple.

No one likes jock straps. But, leaks are worse.

I was running into leak problems when sitting and the pad would shift around or during activity when my pad would slip out of place.... or my private was out of alignment. With the jock strap, I've had no problems at all.

I ordered these relatively cheap ones on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WN3SQHJ This brand runs small, so order a size up. I ordered large (I weigh 205) and they work perfect. You still want them to fit snugly, but not enough to make a tenor into a soprano.

Things I've learned: I still need to wear a pair of underwear over the top of the jockstrap because in summer your backside does sweat and it will show up on shorts with a bare butt and a jock strap. A pair of underwear takes care of this issue.

It is so liberating to not to have to worry about clothing leaks. Hope this helps!!

@fritzo Sorry, I have a series of questions.
How long have you been doing this method? 🙂
Is this approach 24/7?
Did you do this from the start, or let time go by?
Did you take PT, and do the homework? Such as Kegel's?

Thanks for sharing!

Jock strap-I started wearing a jockstrap 24/7 about 2-3 weeks post catheter removal when I stopped wearing pull-ups and just pads. I had a few episodes where the pad slipped and I had leakage out the sides. Rather than order underwear with a super tight pouch, I decided a jock strap would be easier because a super tight pouch underwear would probably tight everywhere.

I've been wearing the jock strap for about two months or so now.
Yes, 24-7 wearing the jock strap with a pad.

I started kegels one month before surgery and started back up post catheter.

I am getting pelvic floor PT, which has been very helpful.

PT steps so far;
• increased kegel routine from 3x a day to 5 days a week with more reps. Had to build up to this.
• Encouraged to drink more water, targeting 1/2 my body weight in ounces every day.
• Working on methods to extend the time between going. Lots of urge control techniques.
• Added a few exercise to deal help my ab tightness....Cat/Cow, Bird Dog, plus lots of hip flexibility exercises.
• Just started TENS treatment.
• Had a session using a probe to measure my kegel function, which included measuring the strength and duration of my squeeze and how well I was able to relax the muscle.

Hope this helps. Ask any if you have more questions.

Thanks for all the info. Super helpful. I will talk to my PT tomorrow. Think I will follow your example. I have to squat a lot to care for my pets, leaking and side blowouts is almost daily. I think I have a very long way to go.
Continued success! Hope to hear more good news as you progress.
