Was there an uptick in autoimmune conditions after COVID vaccines?
A few years ago I experienced intense vaginal itching. I tried various over the counter creams, none of which helped. In desperation I went to a walk-in clinic (I was unable to get in to my primary care doctor) and I was examined by a Medical Assistant who prescribed a steroid cream. She said that there was a stronger one that she hesitated to prescribe because it can cause thinning of the skin. The cream was not successful and eventually I was able to see my PCP who said this was Lichen Planus and prescribed Betamethasone cream. That, thankfully was effective. The following year when I had my yearly health check I complained that my legs were very itchy. My PCP looked at them and said that I could try an OTC steroid cream. This was shortly after I had a COVID booster. I then made an appointment with my dermatologist and asked if he thought I was having a reaction to a new medication that I was taking for blood pressure. He said "this isn't a drug reaction, I think this is Lichen Planus!" He prescribed Betamethasone and it was effective although I still get occasional red, itchy bumps. I have learned (from Mayo Clinic Connect) that this is an autoimmune condition and wonder now if an uptick in autoimmune conditions has been seen since the administration of COVID vaccines.

Note from the Community Director
The vaccines that help protect against COVID-19 are safe and effective. Clinical trials tested the vaccines to make sure of those facts. Healthcare professionals, researchers and health agencies continue to watch for rare side effects, even after hundreds of millions of doses have been given in the United States.
Side effects that don't go away after a few days are thought of as long term. Vaccines rarely cause any long-term side effects.
If you're concerned about side effects, safety data on COVID-19 vaccines is reported to a national program called the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System in the U.S. This data is available to the public. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) also has created v-safe, a smartphone-based tool that allows users to report COVID-19 vaccine side effects.
If you have other questions or concerns about your symptoms, talk to your healthcare professional.

@sueinmn generally, that’s correct. I agree.. But the NIH did a study about the increase In this particular syndrome right after the Covid vaccine and The cases skyrocketed..
@gently I would hope so with so many people having serious side effects after being vaccinated. I personally know two people who are very very ill with long Covid.

I too have recently been diagnosed with RA, after contracting COVID. It started 2 weeks after Covid in one knee then the next knee a week later, and then a huge flare were i was diagnosed after a stay in the hospital. That is when the research started for me.
One article I read an article that researches the increase in autoimmune diseases due to COVID, in the medical journal Nature Review Rheumatology July 2023 vol 19.
Although it helped me understand the cause it didn’t help me deal with my new reality, which is to change. I started on a health journey which I should have started years ago. I thought I use to eat healthy, now I do. I’m careful with my food, little if any alcohol, and exercise regularly. I also take my medications as directed.
It is my body and only I know my body best, doctors can help but I have to be my own advocate. Don’t wait for the doctors, do your own research, try to heal yourself. With autoimmune diseases look at your food choices and the impact on your gut microbionome.
RA has taught me that life is precious and a day without RA pain is a great day and take advantage of the good days.

I agree completely- I am in your same situation with Covid vaccines- then RA and Auto Immune.
Your summary regarding advice to become our own advocates is right in. Our healthcare is quickly becoming a “self serve situation” and having gone through several primary physicians, I have finally found a local clinic with exceptional APRN staff who review my research with me and suggest healthy solutions. One of my recent finds was an OTC product called HemaPlex, to help bring up my iron levels. Have been iron deficient anemic since about 1 month after last Covid vaccine and originally treated with iron infusions once a week for 6 weeks, twice. Both treatments brought the iron levels up only by 1.2 and I never felt the fatigue improve at all. However- I started the HemaPlex capsules- taking just one a day- and after 1 week- I have more energy. Can’t wait to see my new lab reports in early October.
I stopped seeing the rheumatologist I was referred to initially, stopped taking methotrexate with prednisone after 2 years, and 8 months later I have had No flare ups of RA. Have changed my diet- working on improving my exercise habits.
Best advice to all is BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE. Do the research. Thanks so much for your positive input!

3 Reactions@kmacky Im so glad to hear that you are off Methohextrate and prednisone, I hope to be there one day as well. I do not have iron issues myself but so glad that you found a solution that works for you.
For me, I found red light therapy provides me with more pain relief than any pill can give me. So much so, that I bought / invested in my own panel, and can get daily pain relief. It works for me.
This is a journey and have tried and used many things that I hadn’t heard of previously, that are now part of my daily routine.
I hope to be off the medicines like you are, one day and I’ve started reducing mine, as directed by my wonderful Rheumatologist.
Good Health to you!

3 Reactions@linda1334 thank you for sharing. I think we have to share our stories and NOT whitewash or minimize what has happened to us or people we know. I believe many people are suffering in silence and don’t have support or validation. Many are intimidated by doctors and the medical community so won’t dare say anything negative about the vaccine and unfortunately physicians will purposefully avoid making the obvious link. So professionals like myself and the nurses you know need to get loud and angry on behalf of ourselves but also for those who do not have voices to advocate for themselves. I truly wish I was well enough to do more and maybe in the future I will get my health back and be able to advocate for the vaccine injured. No one should be intimidated or shamed into silence. When we hear people chirping how the vaccine “saved millions of lives I want to scream…no it didn’t! By the time the so called vaccine rolled out the deadliest form of COVID was gone and mutated into a much milder version that was tolerated by most people. The absolute brainwashing and harm done by those in charge has been brutal. My goal is to be able to regain my cognitive strength and health enough to finished my masters in bioethics. I have ALOT to work on and hopefully help for the future. I have learned we cannot stay silent and we must hold leaders accountable that includes leaders in politics; medicine, media and government.
