Timeline for bariatric surgery process?
How long of a timeline did it take from getting a referral from PCP to getting very first appt, required appts, and surgery getting scheduled did it take for you to get RNY surgery? I got my referral 2 days ago and today received the message on what's to be expected. I'm just wondering what the typical timeline it is for pre-auth, appts, etc. Would love for it to be completed by the end of 2026 with already meeting my deductible, but thinking that likely wont be the case.

It took 5 months from PCP appt to day of RNY surgery for me to get all appts, education, and pre-op requirements done.

4 ReactionsThe truck is to set all appts asap as soon as you meet bariatric surgeon for the first time. It took me approx 4 months. Mostly due to time to make appts

Many members have given their experience. You probably already realize it's going to be individualized, depending on the classes your clinic requires before surgery, tests, how soon they can be scheduled, and any pre-existing conditions that might need to be resolved before surgery.
Many clinics may require an alcohol use evaluation. After surgery, you are more likely to develop alcohol problems due to changes in the way your revised GI system handles alcohol. They may require no alcohol use for a while prior to surgery, so if you drink, best to stop now.

Yeah I figured it was individualized but wanted to get a feel for an “average” timeline. I rarely drink, a couple drinks every 6 months or so. I don’t care for drinking to get drunk, once in awhile I like to have a Bloody Mary or martini and I don’t smoke or use any tobacco products as well.
