@midnightcandle1 Anxiety any time of the day is uncomfortable. Mornings are my most difficult time as well. I also have civilian PTSD. I awaken many mornings with heart pounding and gasping for air. I oft wonder if it my inner self being fearful of waking up in such a state that takes over before I fully wake up...? I have been working on retraining my mind. At 67 I find it “may” not be possible as I know that I am hard-wired. I am also hard-headed and continue on the battlefield. I get up endeavoring to have something lined up to keep me busy. Distraction works best for me. Others here have input as to ways to deal with the monstrous morning mayhem. There are also times coming to the connect community helps.
@hard-headed and continue on the battle field. I'm not a veteran, sorry 2 say. I write to our troops in Afghanistan nearly every day, have for 19 years. But my point is being hard-headed. My household is "My way or the highway". I live alone at 64. Born and raised in Los Angeles, sheltered by a motorcycle gang to keep me safe from my family. Yeah, the 1% were gentler. Moved to get away from that but I keep finding the violence and battling on others' behalf. Others want me to protect them, but when I do they later claim I was too vigilant.
Good morning @midnightcandle1 Even though we may feel we are getting rest at night, sometimes our brain just does not shut down enough to get good rest. Have you looked at some hypnosis or meditation techniques that will help you fully relax at night time and clear your mind? What about writing down, at night before you go to bed, things that are on your mind or might be worrying you or situations that you have to address the following day,? That might help. Sometimes knowing that there is something planned for the next day will have us anxious before we even hit the floor in the morning. It may be something that you need to research how to let go of that anxiety. If the emotional upset that you had 3 years ago had anything to do with the morning hours that may also be a factor. Hoping you find answers to your dilemma,
Ginger
Some of the physical descriptions of waking up with anxiety sound like before I got a cpap machine for sleep apnea. Then I was pulling off the mask in my sleep because I felt like I couldn't breathe. The doctor added oxygen to my cpap and I was good again. Just a thought.
My antidepressant was causing me sleep issues but there are several options to counteract that side effect.
I hope this helps someone cope a little better.
Hello,@midnightcandle, I am so happy you checked in with us here at Mayo Clinic Connect! This is the place where many, many people have come to find answers to what is going on in their lives.
My name here is Mamacita, and I too experience anxiety and even panic from time to time. I have difficulty from time to time in getting to sleep. When I do sleep, I may have deep, dark nightmares that I never forget.
I also am prone to being overwhelmed if I have been with a lot of people and have not had my quiet time and space. I tend to be extremely sensitive, I pick up on other's emotional states and my hearing is off the charts.
From what I have shared with you, I daresay you are beginning to suspect that I am either from another planet, or I am Neurodiverse. I am on the Autism Spectrum, actually, with ADHD and a large dash of OCD to the mix. Oddly enough, I am quite grateful for all my blessings. My PCP attributes my anxiety to the fact that I am hypervigilent.
He suggested this year that I take a small dose of anti anxiety medication. It helps somewhat. Let's just say I don't jump out of my seat when my husband drives on the interstate anymore!
I don't have all the answers, certainly. But it helps to know that we are all in this together. We all need answers and it helps to have a group to connect with. This is a good one, and I am glad you are here. I hope to "talk" with you again soon. We are better together!

Hi Everyone,
I just want to explain the daily mornings and was wondering if anyone can relate.
Wake up in an okay mood.. tired usually .. get myself ready and go off to work.. I have noticed i usually have anxiety in morning for no reason.. And if I didn't get a good nights sleep my anxiety seems to be higher. I've also noticed a strong sexual desire mixed in my anxiety. As if my sexual desire and anxiety are fighting to which emotion will win over.. It feels like a "tug a war " effect. The more tired I seem to be .. higher level of sexual desire mixed with anxiety.
The anxiety tends to ease off around lunch time.. I do eat in the mornings and snack in between.
As for the sexual desire, it stays.
Can anyone relate?
Ok everyone — here’s one for you! Does anyone with anxiety experience bleeding gums - usually while flossing? It’s my latest symptom?!?
@annedodrill44 Have you been to a dentist lately? Also anxiety can lower the immune system thus causing infections. Have you been diagnosed with bruxism? If you are behind on visits to the dentist...a thought.
Morning anxiety over what's ahead of me - stat.
Hi
I have intense anxiety in the morning. Anything I try wont go true me. Taking a hot bath...don't even feel the hot water. Muscle to tense. Trying to meditade...nope. The only thing the help are short calm exercices. It can take me an hour to eat my 2 toasts. But I eat them. Lost 15 lbs in 2 months. I take a normal dose of 1 mg of ativan to sleep at night for 3 years. I know it s long but for now I dont realy care. Rarely, like this morning, I take 1 to help me.
I had many losts in last 5 years...divorce. My 2 daughters I love so much are living by there own wich is ok of course, but leave the the house so empty.
After my divorce I was "ok". Ready for a new start..I bought a small simple house by my own, but it was full of MAJOR hidden deffects. Cost me all my of my energy and a lot of money..
I ve just lost my job. I was working hard in the same well knowne companie for 25 years. Like every where else , they are reorganising, so they closed all my department.
I'm 56 years old, and just feel these are all radical changes happening in the same time. And havent find what path I can take. Anyway for now I m so anxious I have difficulty to think clearly. The place I worked at was difficult and let me with frustrations fatigue and a lost of self worth
My Dc prescribed me citalopram to try to calm me down. Hope it will work. Starting today at 10mg. Im trying to find a way to see a spychologist but money might be an issue...
After watching tv in the morning. (No news, no stressing serie...). I just lived for the afternoon, with small "missions" . reason to go out and walk and breathe. When I come back at 4pm I'm calmer. The day is almost finished, its starting to get darker. In the afternoon I usually feel better. So in the morning Im always surprised to feel the anxiety back whit so much intensity. So am gratefull to find that discussion. I feel less alone.
Ps I hope my english is not to bad...
Thanks
