Skin rash

Posted by kaybast @kaybast, Jul 27 1:13am

I am on sinus rinses with compound antibiotics , one being Ciproflaxin . A couple of days after the start , I noticed a red rash on the upper side of my fingers , not all but 6 of them coincided with the start of the sinus rinses , however no other place on my body is there a rash . It’s not typical for me to break out in rashes . Seems odd that the rash is no where else on my body …just the fingers … I don’t recall having my hands in anything out of the ordinary .
Is it probable that the rash is from the antibiotics in the sinus rinses ?
Thanks to anyone who can contribute comments ! Kay

When I checked the side effects list I did see skin rash on the list. Have you reported this to your prescribing physician yet?

Most allergic reactions don't start on the hands. Have you been using a different dish detergent? I have late onset of eczema in my life and pool chemicals, certain detergents, and cooking and eating certain foods makes it worse. I don't know if the one and only flu shot I received did this, but it seems strange that after that immunization I now have eczema when before I didn't even get poison ivy. But yes. Call the doc. Most antibiotics can cause rash if your allergic. Have you taken Cipro before? If so, then it's probably not that. You know what fights bacteria? Garlic. Eat lots. Reduce your sugar intake because bacteria loves sweets. Avoid antibiotics when you can. Feel Better!

Thank you very much for your comments . No, I have not taken Cipro before . I think I figured out what was happening. Using the rinse bottle and squeezing in each side of the nose, the meds water was running over the top of my fingers that I had wrapped around the rinse bottle . I did not have on gloves ! Needless to say , I now am wearing gloves for every treatment . Course this does not account for my dizziness so I have to think it’s the meds in the rinse that’s causing it . I do see my ENT Dr this Thursday so hopefully will receive more definitive assessment ! Thanks again and all the best , Kay

@kaybast I don't know what oral antibiotics topically will do, but it's a good hypothesis. You can call a doc anytime if you think the meds are causing problems. The dizziness is a concern. I wouldn't wait. I'm always concerned when I need gloves for meds I'm putting in my body. I was a Chemo RN and I won't put that stuff in me either. (I cured my own cancer.) Special gloves, tubing , and disposal units. Yikes! I've gone holistic in my old age for a good reason. Do you have chronic sinus infections? They claim that the antibiotic doesn't go systemic with the sinus rinses but anything that goes into you becomes systemic after awhile. Another lovely side effect of Cipro is dizziness.

@peter1960 thanks …I’m seeing my ENT Dr tomorrow. Yes I have chronic sinusitis and the previous Drs have recommended surgery however we have treated it over time with antibiotics . My current ENT seems to think these rinses will help . On the RX bottle there was no information as to when to finish . There were 60 pills which would put me at about the time he would see me again . However , I requested to push up the appt to talk through my side effects and will this be an ongoing treatment or what’s next !
Thanks again for your response ! Best, Kay

My daughter had chronic sinusitis and discovered the Netti pot is irritating. You should use Normal Saline if you feel you need to irrigate. She was given a Steroid based nasal spray allergy medicine and it was making matters worse. (Not to mention, making her more aggressive.) Steroids' make it so you don't heal correctly because it jacks up your cortisol. Antibiotics constantly used is going to cause more problems than cure them. This is the reason for all the antibiotic resistant bacterias we have now. That's why you have to use a combo antibiotic. I discovered not going to doctors very often is the key to feeling better and avoiding prescription meds they constantly prescribe. My husband and I are 65 years old and neither are on prescription meds. I swear by herbs and vitamins. Eating right is also necessary. Eat a good quality yogurt especially when you are on antibiotics. I make my own in an Instapot with Chobani yogurt as my starter. (Chobani is a good quality yogurt.) Hope you can sort this out.

@peter1960 thanks for your comments .
I saw my ENT Dr today and he says in looking at the Left Maxillary sinus that the antibiotic sinus rinses have improved alittle . However we have decided that surgery is right for me now . I have had the bacteria Pseudomonas for the last year and a half. Have had 2 sinus infections with cultures to identify the Pseudo . Had lung , UTI infections also last year with sputum culture again identifying the Pseudo . Brought up a sputum this April and again lab shows Pseudo.
So my ENT Dr says he can do out patient surgery(Maxillary Antrostomy) maybe lasting less than an hr and go in and enlarge the natural opening of the maxillary so it drains better and remove the crusts where the mucus gets stuck and becomes the crust and remove swollen tissue causing blockage He think that little “buger” Pseudo is still hanging around there . The left maxillary is completely white !
I’m encouraged as this has been going on entirely too long and I’m ready for some relief !
Meanwhile my Pulmonologist has ordered a chest CT Scan to look at the lungs due to the recent sputum lab report .
Thank you again for your response and well wishes . Will keep you posted . Best, Kay
