How can I see or know if i’m depressed?

I feel sometimes depressed but not all the times. It comes in out of nowhere then disappears.

Depression is having thoughts of past experiences and anxiety is thoughts of future.
Everyone swings between the two, the hard part is knowing what your triggers are when you feel or have depressive thoughts. The goal, stay present, centered.

Thank you Arvind for describing depression so well.

I am 71 now and had my first panic attack at 18 years old, followed by depression and OCD. That was in the very early 70s, and Drs had no idea how to treat this.

By accident, I took up long-distance running in my 20s and my depression faded. So exercise truly helps.

Medicine also helps, as does talk therapy. I started taking Paxil in 2002, 30 years after my first panic attack. And today I live in each moment and I'm grateful for what I have.

All that said, if feelings of depression, panic attacks, and compulsive behavior become just too much, see a Dr. There is no need to suffer and no need to feel ashamed. The condition is quite common, and treatable.

@abelmarcelo Is this what you said?
I've suffered four episodes of major depression, and these are the symptoms I'm describing that can confirm if you're depressed:
1) You have practically no motivation for anything.
2) You can't sleep without medication, and even then it's difficult.

3) You lack appetite and lose weight, though not excessively.

4) It took me a while to recover, but it's possible, although it took me between one and two years.

5) In my case, I stopped reading and listening to music. It's important to distinguish between reactive depression (grief, divorce, etc.) and depression as a medical condition. Of course, this is just my experience, and there may be different opinions.

Symptoms of depression- feeling sadness, having difficulty getting yourself motivated to do pretty much anything, irritably, having difficulty interacting with others. As was said previously, it tends to be directly related to anxiety. Mine is the result of childhood abuse. It’s important to see a psychiatrist for a definite diagnosis and treatment.

@mbixler Working with a therapist is also helpful, to me anyway.

@dyas - Thanks for caring about understanding @abelmarco's message.

Mayo Clinic Connect translation availability depends on the member's selected language and whether they write in that language. Google Translate would be one potential helpful resource to understand this message.

Hi,

I was an ADHD and OCD kid. Struggled all my life. Began with he practice of yoga in 1990. Tried a job over of discipline. My final teacher was versed with n Astana Yoga. It’s challenging but really worth it. Proper breathing technique is the foundation for the practice. I am 81. Get back to me if you have any questions.

Hi Joann.

Yes finding a therapist to deal with panic attacks is a good move. I suggest first talking about it with your primary care provider - and your PCP should be able to help you get or find the resources/medications you need.

You are not alone! Take some comfort in that, reach out to your PCP, and look forward to better days.

All the best to you Joann.

Thanks for your story Mort. About 10 years ago, I took up hot-room yoga and really liked it. There are many drug-free ways, like yoga, to calm the mind.
