Need a long term solutions for migraine

I transitioned to a very low-carb, high “good fat,” relatively high protein diet years ago, and my migraines basically disappeared. I no longer take triptans nor any of the newer drugs. I think it’s the only long term solution. Once I got used to the diet I did not want to go back - ever

Had daily migraines for 6 months, nothing worked until my neurologist gave me Botox. Relief was almost immediate and lasted for almost 3 months. Now get the injections to neck and upper back every 3 months, and have my life back.

Hi, @ranee22, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm glad you've gotten to connect with @mbixler and @lturknett.

Wanting long-term solutions for migraine sounds wise and reasonable.

What I'm wondering is if you could share what symptoms you experience? Do you have a diagnosis of a certain type of migraine?

I have severe migraines from a closed head injury that happened 2/7/94. I fractured my skull in four places. Now I have incapacitating migraines to the point where I can't even keep water down. I remember missing my granddaughters first birthday party and I couldn't go because of a migraine. After that I vowed that I would get control over them the best I could. I did Botox for three years but I don't think it helped that much and I stopped. What's helped me the most is staying on Topiramate 200 mg twice a day and the biggest thing. Daith piercing it's the cartridge at inner aspect of my left ear. I had a migraine when I went to get the piercing done. As soon as she pierced my skin and that hoop went in I felt immediate relief from my migraine. I was in total shock and couldn't believe it! I thought the pain would come back any second but it didn't. I stayed pain free. My migraines now are much more manageable and I plan on getting one more piercing to see if it will help more. I might get one outer part of my left ear to help with my insomnia.

I’ve had intractable migraines (when not taking Botox every three months) since 2001, following a car accident, where I suffered a concussion and damage to soft tissues in my neck and upper back. I received trigger point blocks to multiple sites in this region every week along with pain meds for about 6 months - with very limited relief, as the blocks only lasted about 48 hours, and meds never took the headaches away - just dulled the intensity. A new neurologist recommended Botox. The headache disappeared in 3 to 4 hours and didn’t return for 10 weeks. All of a sudden I had my life back. I’ve been receiving Botox every three months since then. I get some breakthrough headaches but not as severe as before Botox. I also take Aimovig once per month to help prevent the breakthrough headaches and to extend the length of time that the Botox relief lasts.

I had all mercury fillings removed. I went to a naturopathic doctor and had metals testing, chelation to remove all metals from my system, had IV therapy including glutathione, vitamins, circumin, and more. I took about 20 supplements a day,
Had acupuncture and Chinese teas. Went part time at work and eventually had to stop working. I stopped eating a number of foods and beverages.
All of this to say, it helped tremendously. However after 4 more years of working, illness came back. Anyone with migraines needs to look at any treatments that may help.
Best wishes to all who suffer from these life altering headaches.
