Spinal osteoporosis after 10 months on ADT

Salut!Oncologul mi-a dat Orgovix dupa adk prostatic,Gleason7(3+4),margini pozitive 1mm respectiv 2mm stanga,dreapta,radioterapie 38 sedinte,dar nu ma atentionat ca trebuie sa fac o evaluare DXA la inceput tratament si o verificare a nivelului de Calciu total.Din forumuri am inteles ca trebui sa la fac.Osteopenie sold,rezultat coloana lombara neconcludent si Calciu total 10.30.Momentan nu mai iau D3 2000ui si Calciu 800mg.si am inceput mers alert pe banda si exercitii cu si fara greutati.

I was on Fosamax For the first six years I was on ADT. I kept my bones strong and prevented me from having osteoporosis. After six years, I switched over to Zometa and had it for two years and it has kept my bones strong since then.

There’s also Xgeva (denosumab) which some people get instead of Zometa. It is a little higher chance of osteonecrosis

All of these drugs can return you to a better bone health.

You can also switch to estrodiol patches instead of Lupron. That keeps your testosterone just as low, but has fewer hot flashes and Can restore your bone health.

Lots of options to talk to your doctor about.

My husband is not jumping into bisphosphonates. We watched a friend of ours get jaw necrosis from it - that was so sad to watch him go through.
He wasn't a smoker, didn't have any obvious high risk factors.

Why did you switch to Zometa - Is it better than Fosamax ?

While Fosamax worked quite well for me. It can cause your bones to become a little too hard and cause some types of fractures. Zometa Can be used for two years and then you can stay off the drugs for a couple of years. I also got infusions every three months, More convenient than every week with a pill. I was having to take Fosamax every Friday and then wait a half an hour and take Prilosec and wait a half an hour before I could eat. Not exactly convenient. Had to get up a lot earlier in the morning. Also when you take Fosamax You can’t lay down you must sit up very straight or stand up To prevent your esophagus from being damaged.

The drugs have their benefits and their drawbacks.

@jeffmarc Thanks for sharing your experience with these drugs, I have learned a lot from your comments here. For my spinal osteoporosis, my oncologist told me the other day my bone density is slightly below average anyway , and the ADT of Lupron and Nuveqa pushed me over into osteoporosis territory. So I am set up for an infusion of Zometa that will last a year, then probably qa year later, just before my 2-year ADT plan ends. And maybe without the need to do it again after that, though I'm not sure. He downplayed the risk of jaw necrosis, saying it was very unlikely. Have you found any side effects from it?
