Maybe try making a paste with turmeric and rubbing it on your knees.

@dawnduncan Do you use the spice or a supplement? I sprinkle timeric powder and black pepper on anything I can. Supplements often cause GI issues for me.

Has anyone had Genicular Arterial Embolization? Did it release your knee Pain?

I have been recommended for a Genicular Arterial Embolization in both my ankles. Most doctors where I live are not that familar with the treatment. However, it is being recommended by Arthritis Knee. The doctor flies in from IL once a week. Since it has to do with the arteries, I am concerned.

I have pain in my knee that is bone to bone. Shots in the knee is no longer help. I had surgery in the left knee a few years ago. I no longer want another surgery. My right knee is painful and I use began using Voltaren. It does notgive me much help. I’ve read about SoftWare therapy. Have any in the group that have tried that? If so PLEASE let me know? Thank you

I'm sorry for what you're going through. In 2022 when I was 67 I had both knees replaced, 4 months apart.

I ran over 20 marathons in my 30s and 40s. My knee problems weren't from running but from osteoarthritis, which is in every joint in my body. (I have also had my right hip and left shoulder replaced.)

All of these joint replacement surgeries were a success and I'm free of pain, although my running days are over…. I spin 5x/week and love it, and it doesn't hurt my joints. I'm in the gym everyday and when I'm not spinning, I'm doing weight and core work.

Like you, I was bone-on-bone in my knees. Would you consider a knee replacement?

I'm not familiar with SoftWare therapy. In my opinion, a replacement is usually the best option.

That also depends on age, and what other options you have - gel injections, for example, have been cleared by the FDA for the knee. Although it sounds like you've tried that.

What damaged or destroyed the cartilage in your knee? Osteoarthritis? An accident or injury?

Sorry I can't be of much help. A total knee replacement is a good option for most, but tell me a little more like your age and why you are adamant about not having surgery.

I hope to hear from you.

Joe

I have osteoarthritis in my knees, elbows and shoulders. I use Voltaren Gel. It’s not a natural remedy but, it’s quick, easy and you are not swallowing pills. Starting out you need to use it like three times a day for 2-3 days then you need to consistently keep using it once or twice (depending on your activity during the day) every day. It doesn’t smell like a “Ben Gay” type of gel so it’s pretty inconspicuous. You do need a prescription for this. It works very well for me. My sister, brother and mother all use it as well with great success. This might be something for you to consider trying.

Hi Bonnie. I'm very happy to hear that Voltaren Gel is working for you.

You mentioned needing an Rx - there is a version available OTC, so is your gel stronger than that? Thanks because I didn't know it was available as an Rx.

The oral version of this, and the active ingredient in Voltaren, is diclofenac. I took that when I was having long term problems with my hip and shoulder, available as an Rx. It seemed to work. One caution - diclofenac drove up my creatinine to unhealthy levels and this means the kidneys are taking a hit. That's not uncommon from taking NSAIDs like diclofenac. Once I cut down, my creatinine levels returned to normal.

I like BioFreeze products, although they do have a menthol smell. The roll on doesn't have a strong smell.

And ice is the best friend of everyone who suffers from osteoarthritis.

All the best to you!

Joe

I had a great experience with my left knee replacement. However, at 78, I am trying to avoid doing the right. No cartilage. I had hyaluronic hell injection and cortisone but the only thing that has worked for me is strengthening my leg and muscles adjacent to my knee. Hope you find something that works for you.

I had GAE in my right knee over 2 years ago.
It really has helped a lot.
Interventional Radiology does the procedure. It did not hurt at all. I would make sure you have an experienced Doctor and great Hospital.
This is how I would describe the procedure. They sedate you, go thru your groin in the artery using a CT. They locate the inflammation of where the pain is and inject small (beads, 100-300) in the inflamed arteries. Hopefully that will help prevent the pain.
I was having to use a cane to walk prior to the procedure and now I no longer need to.
I sure hope it helps you too.
