MGUS and Susceptibility to infection

Posted by sussu @sussu, Aug 10, 2024

I'm a teacher for special education in two small elementary schools (ages 7-13). I've 12 years left to retired. Asthma, Bronchodilation and MGUS cause susceptibility to infection to all kind of viruses. After normal flu I'll be very sick and get different kind of sequela. Is the some medicals facts or journals of connection with MGUS and susceptibility to illness? Yesterday I was at the doctor's and she didn't know any evidence of that. So they don't know anything about MGUS here in Finland. I appreciate the information I can use to prove my susceptibility to infections.
I am still recovering from corona three weeks ago. The first week at schoolwork after summer holidays was nightmare. I was so tired at half time of the day, so when I'm came back home, I only slept and tried to watch the Olympics games, although the Finns didn't get any medals.

What led to your MGUS diagnosis? M-Spike or abnormal kappa lambda free light chains? What are your immunoglobulin levels? Are you scheduled for regular bloodwork i.e every 3 months or so? I was diagnosed with MGUS over two years ago and am now intermediate smoldering multiple myeloma. I have not noticed any out of the ordinary regarding infections.

@righty01 Because of my feeling of upper body weakness and rash that I had developed my dr ordered blood tests that showed the elevated M protein. I also have two slightly swollen lymph glands in my groin. I've had a pet scan and CT scan and numerous ultrasounds. I'm scheduled for next blood tests in September.

Sorry that your condition has advanced. 🙁

@kjoed53 the neurologist was in the process of conducting an exam on the nerves and muscles in my upper arm, both of which tested as normal, so I'm not expert enough to know what else she could have done.

I have been getting weekly allergy shots for a grass allergy since early this year. However, I have NOT had any of the traditional allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, sneeezing, etc.

@jinfresno
I developed an allergy to raspberries as an adult. The only symptom was a rash.

If you are worried about your immune system, probably the first thing to look at are the three primary immunoglobulin (IgM, IgA, IgG) levels. I (74-year-old male, high-risk MGUS/SMM) have slightly below normal IgM, and low normal IgA and IgG. Does this make me immunocompromised? Perhaps slightly. Treatments exist - generally replacement therapy - for serious cases.

@kjoed53 Interesting. As mentioned, I had the testing and all that came up was grass. I don't obviously eat grass or roll around in it, so I doubt that is the cause of my rash.

Glad you got your source identified though!!!!!!!!!

I was diagnose with smolderinng multiple myeloma in 2023. I was tired most of the time, not my usual energy level. I was sent to an inmunologist trying to find the cause. That is haw they found the SMM. I was told SMM have no symptoms. But I would exhaust easily, have frequent headackes, my back herts and have balance problems. Doctors don't have an explanation, my labs are good. I could not have any arrangements at work because my doctors could not fill out any paperwork. Thanks God I was able to retire. I beleive there is a need to better understand and document what this condition do to people. It is not symptoms free.

My IgA is 19 and IgM is 26 and my IgG is 1990. My immunoparesis has also been called hypogammaglobunmia. Basically it means no new antibodies and not many of the old ones. I worry about it but have been told there is not much to do right now and I should just do what I did during covid. I haven't had major infections yet but shingles is trying to flare up more and I do get little skin infections that resolve quickly. The T cells and white blood cells seem to be doing their job but I'm skeptical that I'll make it through cold and flu season since I had no response to a pneumonia vaccine.

@rosoto totally agree. the doctors seem happy to downplay my actual experiences that don't align with their expectations.
