Medication for acid reflux/GERD

Posted by kathyhg @kathyhg, Jan 3, 2024

I’ve been struggling with acid reflux/GERD for a few years and my doctor has just suggested I take a PPI proton pump inhibitor (such as pantoprazole). He was previously reluctant agree to this, despite recommendation by the gastroenterologist I saw.

I’m sure there have been discussions here related to taking PPI’s with bronchiectasis and Mac but wonder what others have experienced related to this?

@blueiris
Happy to share helps with GERD. We also found DGL (deglycerized licorice) soothes the esophagus and aids digestion. Do not use regular licorice as it increases BP.

@blueiris another natural relief is Reflux Gourmet.

My Nose and Throat doctor actually gave me samples of Reflux Gourmet. It’s algae based and protects the stomach lining. I bought it through the same company- you can buy chewing gum, liquid or sachets individual so easy to put in a pocket and squeeze out when needed even if you take pump inhibitors. I think this product is helpful.

@lilianna whenever I go to the doctor my blood pressure sky rockets because even if I don’t feel anxious apparently my body does react to the visit. It is possible it is neither medication. Try taking it at home and see what numbers show up. I definitely would not say it is the gerd med.

@irene5 My white coat syndrome isn't related to omeprazole. For some reason in the past 2 years I just have it. I have to warn all clinics, doctors and staff that they will be alarmed at my BP but usually when they do it again at the end, it has dropped substantially. It is normal at home when I do it twice a day. Sometimes it's a little high in the evening. I have had it reach 164/100 at urgent care but it went down to 150/83 which is still high, but they understand what is going on and when I get home it's 133/79. I just get it into my head when I go in and don't know how to stop it.

@scoop I missed this back in 2024. Good information from Dr. Huitt, retired.
I knew all except the "no more than 6 oz. at a time. I'm trying so hard to have enough liquids and then reduce it from 8oz to 6oz??????....well...
Good information and I will consider the 6oz suggestion.

I've had very good results (much less coughing at night) when I take a teaspoon of Reflex Gourmet before sleep.

@scoop While I know NJH believes Bronchiectasis and reflux is related I did not know that you have a reflux problem.
Good to know you have had good results with Reflux Gourmet. I am also looking at the Nutrist Refluxer product, a capsule.
Do you buy the Gourmet on line or in a brick and mortar store. If on line did you find one supplier price better than another?
Sounds great, less coughing at night.....and better sleep I hope.

@blm1007blm1007 You can get Reflux Gourmet on Amazon. I’m not crazy about the flavor but I can live with it. No water after you take it because that would wash it all away so of course I get thirsty after I swallow it.

@maryjanechilds "No water after you take it"
Makes sense in terms of keeping it where we want it and also because, as I just reminded myself, if thinking about a pill with alginate, no water three hours before bed or if you wake up after going to bed and intend to stay in bed.
Do you practice no water or food 3 hours before bed and until the next day begins. I learned that during my visit at NJH.
What about for you @scoop,.

Barbara, I try to limit my water intake as much as possible before bed but strangely I am the most thirsty at night. Very irritating! I take my nighttime pills early (7 PM)
and then start sucking on ice cubes. I seem to manage with this system.
