Are droopy top eyelids related to Parkinsonism?

Posted by Laurie J Van Roekel @laurievr, 2 days ago

I have had a droopy eyelid in my right eyelid for many years, but it has recently gotten a lot worse, and my left eyelid is also now drooping. It looks like I have an allergy, but as far as I know this isn't the problem. I have very dry eyes and I use drops frequently for this but it hasn't helped the droopyness. Does anyone else have this problem?

Hello @laurievr,

I have had eyelid surgery to take care of droopy eyelids, but I know of others who have had the same surgery and have not had Parkinson's. I have been told by ophthalmologists that dry eyes are a problem for PD patients because we often don't blink enough.

Are you considering surgery for the droopy eyelid? I had the surgery to help with my peripheral vision. It was impacting my driving. What type of difficulties are you having because of the droopy lid?

It is very common with PD to have a skin condition known as Seborrrheic dermatitis. It causes dandruff, dry forehead, and drooping eyelids. Luckily, my insurance covered an operation to restore my eyelids. You will need to also use a prescription shampoo..

So far, my vision has not been affected. but I will be seeing my ophthalmologist this week for my double vision and I will see what he thinks about my eyelids. My eyes have been very dry for years but I really stepped up my eye drops and hope this helps. My right eye lid has been a bit droopy for years, but now it is saggy, with extra skin. The left is starting to get that way. THank you for your response.
