Best probiotics after antibiotics

Posted by questions2244 @questions2244, Aug 5, 2023

Hello,

I’m looking for help identifying the best probiotic to take after 10 days of antibiotics. There are so many options. I have been taking florastor but not sure if I should continue that since I have a tendency to get yeast infections. What is best for preventing c diff and vaginal health? And for how long? I’ve asked pharmacists and they seem to say anything but the research seems to be more strain specific.

Thank you

I too take florastor. I had c-diff in 2011 and was in the hospital and they gave it to me then and my specialist said to continue. But that was a long time ago so do not know what is really recommended today.
I know the studies say that probiotics do not prevent C-diff. But do they help repopulate the intestine with healthy bacteria????
And I have avoided broad based antibiotics since 2011 (it was amoxicillin given me by my dentist that caused my C-diff)

@lizabetpadden I don't know Align. Fortunately, I have not had a reoccurrence of C-diff

I had cdiff & ecoli infection last fall & a recurrence of cdiff this spring. After being treated with very powerful antibiotics, the Doctor suggested Florastor this time. Been working well for me. I don’t take it every day now; every other day. The other one suggested was Culterelle. After researching, it might help to switch off between the 2 since they have different beneficial good bacteria.
I find it strange that 2 different GI’s didn’t think it was important to take them after antibiotics & infection. They literally said, “If it helps take them if you do mind spending the money..”
My reading about the microbiome says differently.
I think our poor guts need all the help they can get!
But all the probiotics in the world won’t help if diet is not cleaned up, I found. My post infectious IBS is much better now that I’m eating clean. No gluten, sugar & very little dairy.

Hi, I'm currently on day 6 of vancomycin. I got c-diff from taking clindamycin about 4 weeks earlier. I've been taking 2 tablets of Florastor twice a day, and one capsule of BIO-K+ once a day . I take the Florastor with my first and last vancomycin dose of the day. ( Florastor is a yeast and the antibiotics don't hinder it. ) I take the BIO-K+ probiotic mid day : I time my dose to be atleast 2 hours before and after a vancomycin dose otherwise the vancomycin will kill the probiotics. I'll continue this dosing for atleast a month after my 10 days of vancomycin is complete. From all my reading it seems that these two probiotics are the most research backed i could find. Thats why I take them. I have found the ignorance of the medical personelle to be unconscionable . Their ignorance and lack of guidance and true health care about diet ( what actually heals, what hurts), cleaning protocols so I don't reinfect myself or infect others, and probiotics is appalling. I know these are strong adjectives, but honestly to me: not strong enough. Good Luck and a Big Hug to everyone who reads this because if you've been battling c-diff i know you could use one!!!

From the mouth of a world renowned infectious disease doctor, Vancomycim does not cure C-Diff. It just gives a false negative. Look to VOWST for relief.

@wyluq

You are 1000% percent correct. The lack of knowledge of C. Diff (causes, treatment, and avoidance of recurrence) is appalling. CDiff.org, this MayoClinic platform, and Dr. Sabine Hazan and another gastroenterologist in FL, have provided more helpful information to me than many of my doctors. I have told all of my doctors about my C Diff infection and have asked all of them “What would you prescribe for me if I need to take antibiotics in the future, knowing my history of CDiff?” The majority said “I have no idea.” If I ever need to take broad-spectrum antibiotics again, I will insist that my gastroenterologists are consulted and request to also take Dificid with the other antibiotic. I read everything I can find to educate myself about this nasty bacteria. I can’t count on many of the professionals to be of much help.

I had cdiff and was given fidaxomicin, generic for deficid. Paid $399 through Medicare. I agree gastro doctors do not help you with diet, correct probiotics etc. if I am on an antibiotic, is it recommended to take fidaxomicin with the antibiotics so I don’t have a reoccurrence of cdiff. My doctor recommended to take florastar with antibiotics and not fidaxomicin. What is the correct regimen to follow?
