Bronchiolitis and Bronchiectasis

I was diagnosed in 2022 with Bronchiectasis and Mycobacterium avium complex. A year and a half ago I came down with RSV and needed to be hospitalized. I was told at the time that I had Bronchiolitis which affects the small airways.

I have read numerous sites and I still don’t have a sense of how the two diseases relate although I know Bronchiectasis is chronic, while Bronchiolitis is acute. My CT scans show damage from Bronchiolitis as well as Bronchiectasis. Is Bronchiectasis an umbrella diagnosis for a bunch of respiratory diseases, of which Bronchiolitis is one?

Reading or video recommendations to help me understand this would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

I am interested too! I had one CT scan interpreted with bronchiolitis as well as bronchiectasis a few years ago. I have never been able to understand the relationship (or distinction).

I am interested too! I had one CT scan interpreted with bronchiolitis as well as bronchiectasis a few years ago. I have never been able to understand the relationship (or distinction).

@lvnl interesting as I’ve had the same findings as well. My ID ordered a CT scan before initiating treatment following an NTM finding during a bronchoscopy. The CT indicated Bronchiolitis along with the follow up CT after several months of treatment. I asked my ID about this several times and tried to reach out to the radiology center to get clarification but was never successful.

My CT report also included bronchiolitis the last time, but I was infection and symptom free. My pulmonologists called it "air trapping" as the result of asthma that was poorly managed for a long time (now well-controlled.) They said it is permanent, and my FEV 9forced expiratory volume) test confirms it.
