Prolapse concern
Well I saw the surgeon regarding my constant problem with my second half of my Loop Ostomy. My intestine has come to the surface through the same place as my stoma and is causing problems. It’s about 5” long and 2” wide. Almost fills my appliance and causes problems. We tried icing it, powdered sugar, massaging it and it shrinks up some but as soon as I get up it almost immediately drops down again.
Dr said I need surgery to cut it back and stitch it so it won’t come back out.
Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?

Yes, It has been 8 years since my Illeostomy and recently my stoma prolapses out and gets long and bigger around. When I lay down or over night it goes back in but when I get up it prolapses out again. It did not do that until just recently so I am going to consult a hernia surgeon to see what can be done about it.
I’m curious, why a hernia doctor and not your surgeon?
The last time I checked (it was a *long* time ago) the hernia doctors didn't want anything to do with stomas, but that could certainly have changed.
@fckaiser let us know how the appointment with hernia surgeon goes goes!
@susanf8 This is a gastro office and I know he has done these before. Thank you for your comment.

1 ReactionMy stoma was the size of half a tomato plus prolapse for the time between getting it, having chemoradiation and chemo, and finding out the tumor was still slowly growing. When they went in to get the tumor, since i wasn’t going to want a reconnect, they shortened that section and now I have a 55-mm or so stoma almost flat to my skin. Love it. Also love my stock of big Heagi brand bags with 105-mm flanges that rarely leak! (knock wood, mine started to a couple of days ago.) look around and you might find something that fits and sticks better than the big brands.

1 Reaction@fckaiser Just checking in to see if you had your consult with the hernia surgeon and if they can do something about your prolapse.
@susanf8
Susan,
Yes, they can do something about my prolapse if I decide to do it. It is not super bothersome right now and has been behaving lately. They would do a mesh attachment inside to prevent the prolapse if needed. I can go weeks with no prolapse, then for no reason my stoma will prolapse for a couple of weeks. I have found if I sprinkle sugar on it, it tends to recede. So I am going to put off surgery for right now and see how things go. I always have that option if it gets too bothersome. Thankfully, with gentle pressure I can always push it back in. Thanks for asking.

1 Reaction@fckaiser good to know they can do something if you need them to. That must be very reassuring.
@rmsmorgan, what type of cancer did you have?
@rmsmorgan I hadn't heard of HEAGI before. They seem to have a very big selection, and a lot of variation in bag closures.
Are they available through medical suppliers as well? Does your insurance cover them?
