Does anyone have both peripheral neuropathy and venous insufficiency?
As of now I have been diagnosed with both peripheral neuropathy and venous insufficiency, both in lower legs. Does anyone else have both of these? Can these two be related? Does this affect what treatment lotions (e.g. magnesium) can be used for the neuropathy? Is there any causal relationship of one to the other? Sorry for so many questions. This is kind of overwhelming at at the moment.

I had venous insufficiency, with a painful leg ulcer, a number of years ago! I went through vein stripping, and that helped, but now, 30 years later, varicose veins have come back. I was diagnosed with chronic inflammatory polyneuropathy last year, and have felt numbness and pins and needles, creeping up slowly in both legs, and both arms! It’s most disconcerting!!

2 ReactionsHi jum13, I have both - venous reflux and neuropathy. What you're trying to figure out - which condition is most responsible for your symptoms - is the same thing I've been wondering about. The problem is the tremendous overlap in the types of symptoms that both of these conditions cause. I have not had my venous problem treated because I've suspected that the bigger issue for me is the neuropathy. And neither the neurologist nor the vascular surgeon can really tell me if vein ablation would significantly improve my symptoms. I have a new neurologist at Stanford's Autonomic Disorders clinic and when I see him in August he may have some new ideas or suggestions about what to pursue.

2 ReactionsI am a Type 2 diabetic. The PN is what me diagnosed in 1991. Two years ago I had the first bone on my right big toe amputated. Both before and after the surgery, I have had several doctors tell me. I should wear compression socks. Since the surgery, I have also been getting foot cramps. I have been wearing Otho shoes and slippers with taylored inserts for them. I had bought a bunch of Compression socks a few years ago when I first complained about the cramps. I don't like wearing them because they are hard to put on and take off. Two weeks ago I had an appointment with a neurologist and he suggested I wear compression socks. I have started wearing them and since then the cramps have gone away. Several have mentioned vein problems. I use the Duluth Trading Company Compression socks and I have had no more cramps! I still don't like them because it takes me from ten to twenty minutes to put them on.

Hope you receive helpful news for all of us. Think I'm in early stages of neuropathy, ALA or Nervive actually helps me tolerate the pins and needles or numbness. Limited long walks without resting. Of course, chemotherapy now, always something! Thanks.
I used to have trouble putting on my compression socks. I goggled a video that showed me an easier way to put them on. I'll try and describe the method I use. I hold one of them with my thumbs on the inside with both hands and fold about 2/3's of the sock down to the outside. I place my foot in the half sock securely keeping the fold in the doubled position. After I get my foot in all the way I gradually pull up the half of the sock that was doubled over. I only need to use 10 - 15 units of compression. That makes it easier but I can still do it with higher compression. I can't walk well without compression socks and sneakers on but keep them on from the time I get up until the time I go to sleep. Core-spun by Thermafirm have been the most comfortable sock for me. You need to measure very carefully around your calf to get the correct size. Hope this helps.
@jacqincaliforI am in almost the same situation. My vascular doctor says that even though there are some issues with my legs' veins, they are not the cause of my neuropathy.
I am wearing compression socks and doing exercises to promote circulation. I was told ablation was not needed.
I am not sure if I am doing better but my tingling and nubness have decreased.
My main issue is my right leg is dropped and my balance is terrible bad.

1 ReactionI am told an accident brought on my left foot neuropathy. I was on Gabapenten NO help, now on Pregabpenten SOME help I force my toes to move a lot, stumble a lot, A/fib limits my walking speed to... I'm coming. Pufff PUFFF! Is there a real PAIN MED for this problem?
I am finding (this) website to be too complicated. Just me. Have no help with this problem
@amota I have had my leg veins "closed" with a saline injected solutation.. moderate help until I was victim of a knee energy which smashed the nerve going to my foot. It KEEPS, CONSTANTLY sending PAIN memo to my brain. If removing my foot was the solutation, I would happily have it done WITH a spring prosthetic replace. With my luck, I would have "phasntom" pain. Compression socks didnt do anything except wear me out putting them on. This has been going on for some 15 years. Accept, keep mind occupied, hobby, read, I have not had prayers answered for OTHERS. Tough it out. On the green side of grass, for now.
