Does anyone have both peripheral neuropathy and venous insufficiency?

Posted by arflmi33 @arflmi33, Jan 22, 2025

As of now I have been diagnosed with both peripheral neuropathy and venous insufficiency, both in lower legs. Does anyone else have both of these? Can these two be related? Does this affect what treatment lotions (e.g. magnesium) can be used for the neuropathy? Is there any causal relationship of one to the other? Sorry for so many questions. This is kind of overwhelming at at the moment.

Hello Everyone,

I placed myself in this category to find a support group for Veinous Insufficency. I also suffer from Small Fiber Neuropathy, Morton Neuroma and some other minor contributories. I was about to start Veinous Ablation on many veins but got nervous, causing my BP to rise and couldnt follow through with it. If anyone is suffering from this medical assortment, please feel free to contact me.

Thx,
RM

Do you mean veins or arteries? Arteries carry blood and oxygen to your extremities and veins carry it back to your heart.

Hello

Veins, not arteries. Vein ablation and other injection techniques are outpatient procedures to close off a number of smaller veins that are varicose in nature or dont have properly working properly.

I plan on posting more in the near future. I'm looking for a vein specialist that can ease my stress about the procedure.

I have Venous Insufficiency and PN. My understanding of VI is that the valves no longer work in those veins so that the blood pools. I don't know the cause but some of it is related to aging as the valves wear out. The ablation just shuts off those veins and so you don't have the pooling of blood. I saw two cardiologists - one suggested the ablation procedure and one felt that if I wasn't having swelling that I could just wait and see. I chose to wait and see. I wasn't worried about the procedure - just didn't want to do it if I didn't have to.
I also have idiopathic PN in my feet and lower legs. I take Lyrica to help with the discomfort. I exercise and try to eat healthy because it's good for me in many ways but also there doesn't seem to be much to help with these two conditions.
Not sure if that helps you but let me know if I can provide any additional information. Good luck.

Hello

Thank you for that information. It's very helpful. The internet says sitting, standing, weight and aging contribute; in addition to possible genetic factors and Vitamin B12 deficiency which cause irreversable neuropathy. I was low on B12 and Iron in the past. Aging causes tissues to thin out. Biking and stretching has helped. I thing weighted or banded leg workouts help with muscle structure but my Morton's Neuroma makes lunging impossible. Ice baths and Epsom salt help with the nerves. I take EB-N6, but it hasn't made a difference. I take OTC pain meds. I was told that ablation may help with the nerves.

I have Peripheral Neuropathy, not caused by diabetes, back pain and a Chronic DVT. Seems as if this is really a 'thing' to have both at the same time and from the feedback, we seem to be getting from the doctors, there's no relation.

I hope you can get answers. It’s difficult to be treated with this ailment.

I had the endovenous chemical ablation on the worst of my 2 CVI legs starting Dec 09, 2025 with the 2 Varithena treatments after that. After the required full leg length compression stock time period was ended I chose not to wear my normal compression socks. After 8 or 9 days my lower leg was visibly enlarged and felt firm to the touch, like the treatment didn't help. I would prefer not to have to wear those things if I didn't have to. Perhaps I didn't do enough walking during treatment.

I've had P.N. since '08. Venous insufficiency wasn't diagnosed until 2024. In the interim I've had other problems, so I can't say if the P.N. caused the V.I. so many years later.

I also have both but the venous insufficiency was dx'd many years ago; the PN just last year.

I have superficial peroneal mononeuropathy. The MD who was going to try hydrodissection and first ordered an MRI. That showed possible CVI, now confirmed on ultrasound. The MD who wants to do RFA and foam for a total 6 superficial leg veins tells me CVI is indeed a possible cause of the peroneal neuropathy.

I have had neuropathy in my feet and legs since 2002 when I began experiencing pins and needles. Since then I have lost most feeling below the knees other than the pains from the disease. I started exercising 5 years ago to help me with balance and walking but 6 months ago things started getting worse. My primary ordered some tests that discovered things like a shredded meniscus, a gout tumor in my knee and now venous insufficiency in deep veins as well as superficial ones. While this explains the stains in my skin in my lower legs, I am trying to figure what if anything is this causing versus what is neuropathy related. My legs have become cumbersome and walking is slow and painful yet I still can .
